The UW-River Falls volleyball team fell three sets to one against 10th ranked UW-Oshkosh in a WIAC match-up in Oshkosh on Friday night.
UWO won, 15-16, 16-25, 25-23 and 25-20.
The Falcons fell 25-16 in set one. UWO took advantage of a 9-2 scoring run to take a 19-10 lead in the first set.
However, the Falcons bounced back to win set two 25-16 after falling behind 4-0 to start. The Falcons continued to play tough against UWO, which was the preseason pick to win the WIAC for the third consecutive year, but UWRF could not quite close the set out, falling 25-235 in set three. The final set saw the Titans use a 7-0 run to close out the match. The Falcons put together some impressive runs, leading 18-12 at one point, but the chance of an upset was finished as the Titans closed out the match by a final set score of 25-20.
Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) led the Falcons with nine kills and teammate Jean Theis (Shakopee, MN, Shakopee) followed with eight. Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) had 25 digs to lead UWRF. Setter Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) finished with 26 assists on the night. Aleisha Bagin led UWO with 15 kills.
The Falcons suffered from a .095 kill percentage for the match, although the Titans only hit .139. Both teams finished with six blocks.
The loss drops the Falcons to 10-7 overall and 1-3 in the WIAC, while the Titans improve to 14-2 overall and 12-2 in the WIAC. The road ahead does not get much easier for the Falcons as they travel to 11th ranked UW-Whitewater. The first serve will be at noon Saturday at Whitewater.
