The Falcon volleyball team was swept by 16th ranked UW-Eau Claire at the Karges Center Wednesday. The Falcons also hosted their third annual Dig for the Cure event to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Game scores were 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21.
The win clinched a share of the WIAC championship for the Blugolds. Both Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh finished the regular season 7-1 in WIAC play.
The Falcons put forth a strong performance and were lead by Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) who finished with nine kills on the night. Meanwhile teammate Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) finished with eight. The Blugolds were lead by Elizabeth Anderson who finished with 11 kills on the night.
Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) finished with 18 assists and Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) chipped in seven. Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) had 14 digs on the night for the Falcons while Sami Kaminski (Weyerhaeuser, WI, Weyerhaeuser) finished with eight.
The Falcons out-blocked the Blugolds 6-3.
The Blugolds took advantage of a 5-0 scoring run after the Falcons took a 5-4 lead early in set one and never looked back throughout the match.
The loss drop the Falcons to 15-10 overall and 3-5 in the final WIAC standings. Eau Claire improves to 16-7 and 7-1 in the WIAC, which makes them co-champions with Oshkosh.
Up next for the Falcons is the Halloween tournament hosted by UW-La Crosse. The first match is 3:30 p.m., on Friday as the Falcons take on the host team.
