Volleyball UWRF Sports Information

Volleyball Team Finishes 1-3 at La Crosse Tourney

The Falcon volleyball team finished 1-3 at the UW-La Crosse Halloween Tourney played Friday and Saturday in La Crosse.

On Friday the Falcons lost to the host, UW-La Crosse, in five sets and to Luther College in three sets.

On Saturday the Falcons opened with a three set loss to No. 7 ranked Carthage College and then defeated UW-Superior, three sets to one.

La Crosse 3, River Falls 2
In a back and forth match, LC won the first set, 25-23 and the Falcons won the second by the same score. UWL took set three, 25-16 and the Falcons won set four, 25-18. UWL won the deciding set, 17-15. Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) led the Falcons with 19 kills and a .359 hitting percentage. Green also had four block assists and two aces. Jean Theis (Shakopee, MN, Shakopee) finished with 11 kills. Sami Kaminski (Weyerhaeuser, WI, Weyerhaeuser)had 10 kills and had three aces. Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) ran the offense and finished with 46 assists. Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie), who had 15 digs, also had three aces. Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) led the team with 27 digs. The Falcons finished with 12 aces, but also had 13 service errors and eight reception errors.

Luther 3, River Falls 0
The Falcons were swept by Luther in the second match on Friday, 28-26, 27-25 and 25-18. Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall)led UWRF with 14 kills. She also had nine digs and one block assist. Liz Braun (Racine, WI, St. Catherine's) finished with six kills and three block assists. Green had eight kills and led the Falcon defense at the net witih two solo and three block assists. Suda finished with a team high 34 assists and Preiner led the team with 17 digs.

Carthage 3, River Falls 0
The No. 7 ranked Lady Reds defeated the Falcons, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-17 to improve to 21-7 on the year. The Falcons hit just .095 in the match. Gibbemeyer led the offense with 15 kills and she had nine digs. Green finished with nine kills and two block assists. Braun finished with three block assists nad three kills. Buchannan led UWRF with 31 assists and she had seven digs. Kaminksi and Green had two aces each. Abbey Schmidtman (Renville, MN, Renville County West) and Linnea Osterberg (Center City, MN, Chisago Lakes) each had 12 digs to lead UWRF.

River Falls 3, Superior 1
The Falcons rebounded to beat Superior in their last match of the tourney, 25-23, 24-26, 25-12, 25-12. UWRF hit a much better .212 in the match. Gibbemeyer, who was named to the All-Tourney team, had a big offensive match with a season-high 19 kills. Kaminski and Theis each had 10. Suda led hte Falcons with 45 assists. Suda, Preiner and Kaminski all had three aces. Preiner had 20 digs and Kaminski finished with eight. Morgan Wynveen (Stillwater, MN, Mahtomedi) led UWRF with three block assists.

The Falcons, now 16-13 overall, will host the Trick or Treat Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Karges Center. The Falcons play Waldorf at 4 p.m., and Concordia at 8 p.m., on Friday. On Saturday the Falcons play UW-Stout at 10 a.m., and UW-Superior at 2 p.m., on Saturday.
