Falcon Women Breeze Past Concordia 6-2

Jessica Thompson knocked in a goal and added two assists in the Falcon victory

The No. 6  Falcons opened the 2010-2011 NCHA shedule with 6-2 win over Concordia Friday night in Mequon.

The Falcons were tied 1-1 after the first period and took off in the second, outscoring Concordia 3-0 in the second and 2-1 in the final frame.

Concordia struck first scoring 2:26 into the NCHA season, but it didn't take long for the Falcons to answer. One minute later at 3:26, Brook Story (Warroad, MN, Warroad HS)tied the score at one apiece with her second goal of the season. Jessica Thompson (Shoreview, MN, Mounds View HS)added her first of two assists of the evening.

In the second, the Falcons erupted for three goals. Thompson scored her first of the season off an Emma Nordness (Excelsior, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) assist at 10:21 to give the Falcons the lead. Alyssa Jackson's unassisted goal at 12:22 proved to be the game winner and put the Falcons up 3-1. Katie Batters (Champlin, MN, Champlin Park HS) knocked  in her first goal of the season, on a power play, at 13:20 off a Breanne Hrabe (New Prague, MN, New Prague HS) assist to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead.

In the third Concordia struck first, cutting into the Falcon lead at 5:42. The Falcons answered, talling two more goals. The first was from Nordness, her second of the season, at 9:11. Jamie Briski (Chisholm, MN, Hibbing-Chisholm HS) added her  first of the season at 12:49 off a Katie Batters (Champlin, MN, Champlin Park HS) assist.

Melissa Deardorff (Anchorage, AK, Anchorage North Stars)picked up the win for the Falcons. She stopped 21 of 23  shots for the first win of the season and is now 1-0-0.

The Falcons capitalized on 2-7 power plays and comitted five penalties for ten minutes while Concordia went 0-5 and had seven penalties for 14 minutes. The Falcons attacked the net for 37 shots while Concordia had 23.

Tomorrow, the Falcons, 2-0, (1-0 NCHA), look to continue their winning ways with a sweep. Action is set to get under way at 2 p.m. in Mequon.
