The women's basketball team opened WIAC play with a dominating victory over UW-Superior.
Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) had her best game of the season with a double-double, scoring 23 points and adding 11 rebounds. Her 11 rebounds are a career high.
The Falcons won handily, 78-58, with their biggest lead coming with 5:29 to go in the first half as they led 38-16.
After being down 4-0, Tiffany Gregorich went on the first of her scoring tears, scoring the first 10 points for the Falcons. At one point, Gregorich had 15 points while the whole Yellowjacket team had 16.
After being tied 8-8 with 16:15 to go in the first half, the Falcons went on a 20-0 run and never looked back. After that, the closest Superior ever came was within nine with 14:46 to go in the game.
The Falcons again used a stellar defense to keep Superior off-balance the entire night. In the first half, Superior shot a mere 38.7% from the field, and ended the game at a dismal 18-59 for 30.5%. The Yellowjackets also failed to make a three-pointer in the second half.
The Falcons lead 46-31 at the halfway mark.
The Falcons meanwhile went on a shooting tear, especially from the three-point range, connecting on 9-12 from behind the arc.
This included back to back three-pointers fromBrittany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) with1:11 to go in the first half. She also had a game high seven steals, which is also a career best. She also had 12 points on the evening.
The Falcons had a season best 13 steals on the night.
Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City)just barely missed her third double-double of the season. She had 12 points to go along with her eight rebounds.
The Falcons once again proved that rebounding as key, as they out-rebounded the Yellowjackets 49-39.
Connie Urmanski led Superior with 16 points. Kelsey Thingvold contributed 11 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Falcons extend their winning streak to five and improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in WIAC play. The Yellowjackets meanwhile fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the WIAC.
Up next for the Falcons is the defending WIAC champions and 6th ranked UW-Stevens Point. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Karges Center.
