Women's Basketball Team Puts Together Best Defensive Effort of Season in Win

Falcons Beat St. Scholastica, 48-24

The Falcon women's basketball team used a phenomenal defense to shut down the Saints of St. Scholastica, 48-24, Thursday night in Duluth, Minn.

The Falcons defense took control of game, holding the Saints to a dismal five points in the entire second half.  That was just one of the many defensive highlights for the Falcons, who also forced a season best 36 turnovers. The only category that the Falcons did not outshine the Saints in was blocks. The Saints had three compared to the Falcons two. Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) had both blocks for the Falcons.

The Falcons had a season best 23 steals in the game and Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) lead the Falcons with five. Altogether, 10 Falcons recorded at least one steal.

After taking a little over two minutes to score in the game, the Falcons cruised to an easy victory, never trailing throughout the game.  Their largest lead came with 32 seconds to go in the game at 24.  This would prove to be the final outcome and margin of victory.  The closest the Saints would come in the second half was within six with 13:39 to go.

No players on either team scored in double digits in the low scoring contest.  Dohrn, Nikki Guhr (Muskego, Muskego) and Taylor House (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) led the Falcons with eight points apiece.

Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) led the Falcons in the battle of the boards with nine. Overall, the Falcons out-rebounded the Saints, 40-23.

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 10-3 overall. The win also extends their win streak to four.  St. Scholastica meanwhile falls to 2-7 on the year.

Up next for the Falcons is a match-up versus WIAC foe UW-Stout. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Karges Center. The Falcons are 38-37 all time versus the Blue Devils.
