Katie Flanagan (Roseville, MN, Roseville HS) scored the game-winner for the Falcons at 1:19 of overtime to help UWRF to a 3-2 win over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena.
The win extends the Falcon win streak to a school record eight consecutive victories. The eight wins to start a season is the most ever by a Falcon team.
Brook Story (Warroad, MN, Warroad HS) scored her team leading seventh goal of the season, putting the Falcons up 1-0 4:37 into the first period.
In the second period the Falcons, ranked No. 6 in the country, outshot the Blugolds 15 to 5 but failed to score a goal. Each team was unsuccessful on the power play. The Falcons had three opportunities and Eau Claire had one. The Falcons failed to score a goal on a 5-3 advantage.
The third period was action packed. UWEC's Allison Malecek scored at 6:18 to tie the game, 1-1. But UWRF's
Katie Batters (Champlin, MN, Champlin Park HS) scored at 12:10 to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Story and
Emma Nordness (Excelsior, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) picked up the assists. Trailing 2-1, the Blugolds capitalized on a 5-3 advantage at 18:33 to send the game into extra minutes. Both teams had 14 shots on goal in the third period.
That set up Flanagan's game winner that helped keep the Falcons undefeated in NCHA play (6-0).
Between the pipes,
Cassi Campbell (Anchorage, AK, Toronto Rattlers) allowed two goals on 28 shots. She is now 4-0 on the season.UWEC goalie Ally Derthick stopped 37 shots.
Eau Claire was 1 for 4 on the power play and the Falcons were 0 for 3.
Up next, the Falcons host Gustavus Adolphus on Friday night at Hunt Arena. Action is set to get under way at 7:05 p.m.
