Volleyball Team Finishes 3-1 at Gustavus Adolphus Classic

The Falcon volleyball team finished 3-1 at last weekend's Gustavus Adolphus Classic held in St. Peter, Minn.

The Falcons opened with a 3-2 win over Carleton and a 3-2 win over Martin Luther on Friday. On Saturday the Falcons lost, 3-0, to St. Scholastica, but then rebounded for a 3-1 win over Gustavus.

Outside hitter Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) and middle hitter Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) were both named to the All-Tournament team.

River Falls 3, Carleton 2
Gibbemeyer and Green led the offensive charge with 18 and 17 kills respectively. Jean Theis (Shakopee, MN, Shakopee) added 10 kills to the Falcon effort. UWRF won the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-17 to jump out to an early lead. But Carleton came back to win the next two, 28-26 and 25-23. The Falcons showed their poise by winning the fifth set, 15-6.

Green led the Falcons with three aces and she had one solo and four block assists. Once again Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) led the team with 31 digs. Sami Kaminski (Weyerhaeuser, WI, Weyerhaeuser) had 21 and Green 20. Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) finished with 30 assists and Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) had 24.

River Falls 3, Martin Luther 2
ML won the first set, 25-15 before the Falcons tied it up with a 25-17 win. ML took the third set, 25-18, but the Falcons came back with a 25-17 win. In the final set the Falcons played well to take a 15-11 win.

Green and Gibbemeyer again provided the offensive punch for UWRF. Green had 22 kills and Gibbemeyer 16. Theis provided some solid play finishing with nine kills. Preiner (24) and Kaminski (19) led the Falcons in digs. Green had another strong defensive game at the net finishing with six solo and one block assist. Suda (35) and Buchanan (20) led UWRF in assists. Suda finished with a team-high five aces.

St. Scholastica 3, River Falls 0
The Falcons started Saturday's action slow and lost to the Saints, 25-13, 25-20, 25-20. Gibbemeyer had eight kills and had 14 digs. Preiner also had 14 digs and she led UWRF with three aces.

Suda led the Falcons with 16 assists while Buchanan had 12 assists and seven digs.

UWRF hit just .165 in the match, compared to CSS's .358.

River Falls 3, Gustavus Adolphus 1
The Falcons got back on the winning track in their last match of the tourney, defeating GA, 24-26, 25-1, 25-20, 25-18.

Green and Gibbemyer each had 13 kills. The Falcons got some balanced offensive output with Kaminski finishing with 10 kills and Theis nine. Green and Buchanan each had four aces and Buchanan finished with 21 assists.

Suda led UWRF with 23 assists. Preiner (21), Kaminski (14) and Gibbemeyer (13) led the Falcons in digs.

The Falcons open WIAC play this weekend at the Karges Center. On Friday the Falcons host UW-Platteville at 7 p.m., and on Saturday UW-La Crosse at noon.
