The Falcon volleyball team had a solid weekend of play finishing 3-1 at the Ripon College Tournament played Friday and Saturday in Ripon, Wis.
The Falcons finished 1-1 on Friday. UWRF opened against WIAC rival, UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers won a long match, three sets to two. The Falcons responded with a better match in their second contest of the evening and beat Lakeland, 3-0.
On Saturday the Falcons played well in winning twice. They opened with a 3-0 win over Marantha Baptist and then topped the host school, Ripon, 3-1.
Both
Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) and
Jean Theis (Shakopee, MN, Shakopee) were named to the six player All-Tournament team.
Stevens Point 3, River Falls 2
UWSP won the first two sets, 25-12 and 25-17. But the Falcons responded by winning the sets three and four, 25-21 and 25-13. In the deciding fifth set the Pointers took a 15-12 win. It was the first time this season in four matches that the Falcons failed to win a five-set match.
Green led the Falcon offense with 21 kills and a .348 hitting percentage. She also played well at the net with three solo and two block assists. Theis finished with 10 kills and she also played well at the net with one solo and three block assists.
Sami Kaminski (Weyerhaeuser, WI, Weyerhaeuser) had nine kills, 15 digs, a solo block and two block assists.
Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) led UWRF with 22 digs.
Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall), who had six kills, had 17 digs.
Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) led the Falcons with 41 assists. UWRF hit .144 in the match and had five aces and just four serving errors. The Falcons had seven solo blocks and 12 block assists.
River Falls 3, Lakeland 0
After a disappointing finish in the first match, the Falcons responded with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-22 win against Lakeland. This is the team's second win against the Muskies this year. On Sept. 4 the Falcons won
3-1 at the Muskie Tourney.
Green led the Falcon offense with 12 ills. She also had two solo and three block assists. Gibbemeyer had eight kills and led the Falcons with 17 digs. She also finished with one solo and two block assists. Suda led the Falcons with 28 assists. Suda, Green and
Lauren Matask (Eden Prairie, MN, Minnetonka) each had two aces. Preiner finished with 13 digs and Suda 10. Theis, who had five kills, had four block assists. The Falcons hit .161 in the match and again played well at the net with three solo and 14 block assists.
River Falls 3, Marantha Baptist 0
UWRF came out strong in taking a 25-13, 25-11, 25-19 win over MB in Saturday's first match.
Gibbemeyer led the Falcon offense with 14 kills. She also had seven digs with two solo and two block assists. Theis had 12 kills and hit .550 in the match. She had three block assists. Green had 11 kills with one solo and two block assists. Suda led the team with 39 assists. Green led UWRF with two acesl. The Falcons hit .333 in the match.
River Falls 4, Ripon 1
The Falcons ended the tourney with a 30-28, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16 win over the host school.
Green dominated from her middle hitting spot with 18 kills and a .454 hitting percentage. She had two aces and three block assists. Kaminksi played well offensively with 15 kills and a .342 hitting percentage. She had 14 digs. Gibbemyer also helped the offensive effort witih 13 kills. She had 15 digs and two block assists. Theis finished with 10 kills, two solo an done block assist.
Hayley Buchanan (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie) led the Falcons with 52 assists. Preiner led the team with 25 digs. The Falcons hit .232 in the match.
The Falcons, now 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC, will play at UW-Oshkosh on Friday in a WIAC match. Earlier this year in a non-conference match the Titans took a
3-1 win over the Falcons. Action starts at 7 p.m., at the Kolf Sports Center. The Titans were ranked No. 10 in last week's
AVCA poll.
