Five Falcons ended the night in double figures to lead No. 12 UW-River Falls to a 89-83 win over UW-La Crosse at the Karges Center, Wednesday night.
River Falls extended their home winning streak to 11 games and their overall win streak to nine. They haven't lost since Nov. 27 at St. Thomas, Texas.
Jake Voeltz (River Falls, River Falls HS) led the way for the Falcons in the first half with 11 points and nine rebounds. Neither team held a lead larger than six in the opening session. Tony Mane had 16 first half points to pace the Eagles.
In the second half, River Falls extended the advantage to as many as 12 with 11:32 to play. Jordan Rumpel scored five points in two minutes to get the Eagles back within five.
With just 3:32 remaining in the game the Eagles were within four. But as the Falcons have done all season they played their best basketball with the game on the line. A 7-2 run over the next two minutes put the game out of reach. Voeltz scored first in the run, but after that
Brian Kimble (Stevenson Ranch, CA, Coll. of Canyons JC) put an exclamation point on the game with his rim-rattling dunk.
Shane Manor (Altoona, UW-Superior) would add another easy bucket to put River Falls up nine with just over a minute left.
For the second time in as many games a visiting player as put up 30 points in a losing effort at the Karges Center. Tony Mane was the games leading scorer with 31.
Voeltz ended the night as the leading scorer for UWRF. He ended the night with 20 points and 11 boards. Manor added 18 and he kept coming up with big baskets when it seemed the momentum had shifted to UWL.
Jontae Koonkaew (Apple Valley, MN, Apple Valley HS),
Aaron Anderson (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater HS) and Kimble were the other Falcons in double figures with 14, 12 and 10 respectively.
The Falcons shot 61 percent from the field in the game including nearly 70 percent in the second half. They were 32-52 on the evening, and 16-23 in the second session.
UWRF improved to 14-2 on the season and 7-0 in WIAC play. With UW-Stevens Point's loss on Wednesday the Falcons currently hold a two and a half game lead in the conference.
UW-Platteville, who just defeated No. 9 Stevens Point, will visit the Karges Center on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
