Erin Green (Fridley, MN, Fridley) matched her season's best with 24 kills as the Falcon volleyball team not only earned a 3-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh, but also secured a berth to the WIAC postseason tournament.
With the win, the Falcons claimed the sixth and final spot in the WIAC tournament. The Falcons will wait and see who they play in the first round which begins on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Stevens Point, Whitewater and Eau Claire all shared a part of the WIAC crown. UWRF will take on the No. 1 seed, which will be one of those three teams.
In the match against Oshkosh, the Falcons came out in the attack mode. Green led the way with 24 kills and
Danielle Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, MN, Cretin-Derham Hall) added 12, as the Falcons swept the match 25-22, 25-13 and 25-20. Gibbemeyer also added 14 digs for a complete-game performance.
As a team, the Falcons pounded out 49 kills while holding the Titans to 33.
In game one, the Falcons had only three attack errors in a .405 kill percentage pounding.
Mackenzie Suda (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) had all 30 set assists to complement a potent Falcon offense.
Courtney Preiner (Oakdale, MN, Hill-Murray) led the Falcon defense with 15 digs, followed by Gibbemeyer with 14 and
Linnea Osterberg (Center City, MN, Chisago Lakes) with nine. As a team, UWRF had 54 digs compared to UWO's 41.
With the win, the Falcons are now 16-17 overall. They finished the regular WIAC season with a 3-5 conference record, which placed them sixth out of the nine-team conference.
UWRF will hear their next opponent when all the final scores of the day are in. Their next match will be on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at the No. 1 seed for the first round of the WIAC Championships.
