Women's Hockey Defeats St. Olaf in OT

Bruyere Scores in Extra Session

The #5 ranked UWRF Women's hockey team remains undefeated after dropping the Oles of St. Olaf College 3-2 in overtime at Hunt Arena on Tuesday night.

Starting in net for the Falcons was senior goaltender Melissa Deardorff (Anchorage, AK, Anchorage North Stars). Deardorff has been alternating starts with teammate Ashley Kuechle (Saskatoon, SASK, Battleford Sharks), both of whom have kept the Falcons undefeated thus far. Starting at goaltender for the Oles was Sam Ubl.

Scoring the first goal of the night, her first of the season, was Kait Mason (Eagan, MN, Eagan HS) at 6:54 in the first period. Assisting Mason on the goal was Falcon Captian Emma Nordness (Excelsior, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Allie Olson (Monticello, MN, North Wright County HS).

The Falcons took a two goal lead on the stick of Alice Cranston (River Falls, WI, St. Croix Valley HS) at 13:28 in the first. Cranston, leading the Falcons in scoring this season, netted her sixth collegiate goal. The River Falls native is the all-time leading scorer for the St. Croix Valley Fusion, and is displaying her offensive prowess here in the NCAA as well. Assisting Cranston on the score was Olson.

The Oles put their first point on the scoreboard just twenty seconds into the start of the second period. The goal came as Taylor Orr placed a well aimed shot on goal, with an assist coming from Alex Meyer.

The second period would remain scoreless from that moment, as both teams vigorously battled for possession of the puck. The Falcons played clean hockey and committed few penalties, but were unable to capitalize on any of their scoring opportunities.

Margaret Fleming tied the score at 1:33 in the third period with the Ole's second goal of the night. Assisting Fleming was Nicole Stumpf.

Both defenses would remain diligent as they forced the game into overtime.

The Falcon offense dominated the overtime period, forcing the puck to remain in the Ole zone for nearly the entire time of play. The Ole's were able to place one shot on net, but Deardorff consequently denied the scoring chance.

Darion Bruyere (Sagkeeng First Nation, MAN, Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy) sent the Ole's home with a snipe that hit the back of the mesh at 2:45 in overtime. Assisting Bruyere on her fourth score of the season was Alyssa Black (Mankato, MN, West HS).

Deardorff recorded 21 saves throughout the game as the Falcons outshot St. Olaf 49-23.

The Falcons will be facing off against the Yellowjackets of UW- Superior on Friday, Dec. 2 at Hunt Arena. The opening faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
