Women's Hockey Team Tops Marian, 7-2 - Video Added

Seven Falcons Register Two Points in NCHA Win

The Falcon women's hockey team had seven players witih multiple point games en route to a 7-2 win over Marian on Friday night at Hunt Arena.

Marian opened the scoring in the first period. Amanda Reiaman scored the goal off a rebound to the left of Falcon goalie Melissa Deardorff at 4:32.

But the goal woke the Falcons up and they tied the game about a minute later. Katie Batters scored her team-best 13th goal of the season at 5:14. She scored after Brook Story fed her a cross ice pass to the back door. At 13:54 the Falcons scored again to take a 2-1 lead. Katie Flanagan skated in alone against MU goalie, Katie Bassett, who stopped the shot. But Alice Cranston picked up the rebound for the goal. It was Cranston's ninth goal of the season. Alyssa Black picked up the second assist on the go-ahead goal. After a slow start the Falcons finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots on goal in the period. The Sabres had two power-play opportunities and the Falcons one.

In  the second period the Falcons increased their lead to 4-1. At 18:01Crysta Lowell scored from in front off a rebound. It was her second goal of the year. Batters and Story each had assists. The Falcons went ahead, 4-1, with just 39 seconds left to play in the period. Flanagan took a shot from the slot that clanked off the post. Cranston was on the puck and banged in the rebound for her 10th goal of the year. Black picked up her second assist of the game on the goal. UWRF had a 16-7 advantage in shots for the period. Marian had two power-play opportunities and the Falcons one.

There were four third-period goals. UWRF scored just 28 seconds in when Kait Mason scored her sixth goal of the year. Emma Nordness and Alyssa Jackson picked up the assists. Marian scored its second goal of the game at 5:26 to make it a 5-2 game. Amanda Waigand scored the goal. The Falcons got that goal back at 7:46 when Nordness scored her fourth of the year with assists to Jackson and Mason. The final goal came at 11:48 when Amanda Ryder scored her second goal of the season with a slap shot from the right point. Nordness and Jackson got the assists.

Deardorff made 12 saves in the win and she is now 8-4 this year. She played the first two periods. Shelby Rasmussen played the final period and stopped five shots. Bassett stopped 39 of the 46 shots she faced.

Neither team could score on the power play - UWRF finished 0-3 and Marian was 0-5. The Falcons were called for seven minor penalties and Marian for six.

"I thought we played a solid game," said Falcon Coach Joe Cranston. "We rolled all four lines and we were able to wear them down after a while. Tomorrow we'll look at doing the same."

Alice Cranston finished with two goals; Batters, Mason and Nordness each had a goal and an assist and Story, Flanagan and Jackson each had two assists.

The Falcons, now 14-3-2 overall and 12-2-1 in NCHA play, will host Marian at 2:05 p.m., on Saturday at Hunt Arena in the second and final game of the weekend series. The Falcons are 9-2 in home games this year.
