Tess Lueders (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater) unloaded for a career-high 29 points to lead the women's basketball team to a 78-61 victory over St. Benedict Monday at the Karges Center.
Lueders was 10-19 from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line and was 2-4 from the three-point range. These 29 points eclipsed her previous career-high of 21, which is had Nov. 17 against Lakeland.
With the win, the Falcons now have a three-game winning streak after dropping their season opener against Carthage.
The Falcons played a well-rounded game as they shot 41.1 percent from the field, connecting on 23-56. Even though St. Ben's shot better at 43.1 percent (22-51) and was a perfect 100 percent on free throws, connecting on all 13, UWRF was relentless on the boards.
As a team the Falcons out-rebounded St. Ben's 43-23. Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) led the Falcons with nine, followed by Holly Riesselman (Cottage Grove, MN, Park) with seven. Gregorich also added 12 points and Riesselman nine.
Richell Mehus (Spring Grove, MN, Spring Grove) added 13 points which was a career-high for the freshman.
With the win, the Falcons are now 2-0 at the Karges Center. Throughout the game the Falcons never trailed. They would lead by as many as 17 during the first half, and would build a 28 point lead nearly eight minutes into the second half.
The Falcons were outstanding at the line, connecting on 26-28 for 92.9 percent. The Falcon defense was also stellar with 11 steals. Jessie Van Wyhe (Albertville, MN, St. Michael-Albertville) led the way with three.
With the win the Falcons are now 3-1 on the season. St. Ben's falls to 2-1. UWRF is now 5-8 all-time against St. Ben's.
Up next for the Falcons is an away match against St. Scholastica. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28. UWRF is 16-9 all-time against the Saints.
