For the fourth straight game the Falcon women's basketball team led from start to finish as they defeated St. Scholastica 76-54 in Duluth Wednesday night.
Both Brooke Lauritzen (Pulaski, WI, Pulaski) and Jessie Van Wyhe (Albertville, MN, St. Michael-Albertville) had career nights for the Falcons, who have now won four straight. Lauritzen led UWRF with a career-high 20 points. She was 7-10 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line. She also added six rebounds for UWRF who held a 35-32 rebounding advantage over the Saints.
Van Wyhe bested her career-high by three points as she connected for 13 points throughout the game. Her previous career-high was 10, which she had on Jan. 25, 2012, against UW-Stout.
Tess Lueders (Stillwater, MN, Stillwater) added 10 points to balance out a Falcon offense that shot 53.1 percent from the field. CSS meanwhile shot 32.7 percent. Richell Mehus (Spring Grove, MN, Spring Grove) also had a nice game as she finished with eight points. She led the Falcons with eight rebounds.
The Falcons opened the game on an 18-0 run and would lead by as many as 27 throughout the game, even though they failed to make a three-pointer in their four attempts.
With the win, UWRF improves to 4-1 overall and 17-9 all-time against the Saints. St. Scholastica is now 0-5 on the season.
The Falcons will return to action for the WIAC opener at home against UW-Platteville. The game is set to start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1. The Falcons are 39-24 all-time against the Pioneers.
The UWRF Athletic Department will also be collecting teddy bears at the game for the teddy bear round-up. The teddy bears will be donated to the River Falls Hospital.
