The Falcon men's hockey team was shutout for the first time this year, 1-0, in a loss to St. Scholastica on Friday night at Hunt Arena.
The Saints won the tightly contested game with a goal in the first period.
With the loss the Falcons are now tied with St. Scholastics for second place in the NCHA standings. Both teams have 20 points with one game to play. CSS plays at Eau Claire on Saturday and the Falcons host UW-Superior. The Falcons' game starts at 7:05 p.m.
CSS scored the only goal of the first 20 minutes using its potent power play. The Saints entered the game converting on .274 percent of their power play opportunities. Jeremy Dawes took a shot from the right point. Carter Davis picked up the loose puck just to the left of the UWRF goal and scored on the rebound. Austin Brown also picked up an assist. St. Scholastica had an 8-4 advantage in shots during the period and both teams had one power-play opportunity.
The Falcons had a better second period outshooting the Saints, 15-7. But neither team could score. The best chance in the period was a shot by Falcon
Tyler Briola that CSS goalie, Colin Rundell, saw at the last second. The shot glanced off his glove and then off the cross bar.
In the final period the Falcons had a 9-3 advantage in shots but could not get the equalizer. The best opportunity came when the Saints had a 3-on-1. Falcon goalie
Scott Lewan made a great left ro right save on a one-timer by Dawes with about 6:30 to play in the game.
For the game the Falcons outshot the Saints, 24-18. Both teams took two minor penalties with the Saints converting on one of their chances.
Lewan made 17 saves and is now 15-6-2 this year. CSS goalie, Colin Rundell made 24 saves to earn his first shutout this year.
The Falcons are now 15-7-2 overall and 9-6-2 in NCHA play.
