Mason Scores Hat Trick; Nordness Has Four Point Effort

Kait Mason scored the hat trick and had one assist and Emma Nordness had a goal and three assists to help lead the Falcon women's hockey team to a 7-0 win over Concordia University on Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena.

Falcon goalie Melissa Deardorff stopped all 26 shots she faced to earn her second shutout of the season and the ninth of her career. Mason's hat trick is the first by a Falcon this year and the second of her collegiate career.

Nordness and Mason both had their fourth multiple point games this year. Sam Greeley had two assists and this is her first multiple point game. The defenseman has at least one point in each of the team's last three games.

"Melissa (Deardorff) played maybe her best game of her career," said Falcon Coach Joe Cranston after the game. "She was awesome. We started slow, but dominated play for most of the second period and all of the third. Our penalty kill was very good and that starts with Deardorff."

After a slow start the Falcons got moving to score three first period goals. Mason scored her eighth goal of the year at 8:27 from about 25 feet out and beat the CU goalie on the blocker side. She was assisted by Nordness and Greeley. The Falcons went ahead, 2-0, just 11 seconds later when Nordness scored with assists from Mason and Greeley - it was her sixth goal of the year. The three went into the CU zone on a 3-on-2 and Nordness beat the goalie from inside the circle from about 20 feet out. The Falcons struck again at 10:17 when Mason scored her second of the game with assists to Nordness and Alyssa Jackson. Mason scored fron just in front of the CU goal to put UWRF ahead, 3-0. CU had a slight, 12-11 advantage in shots in the period. Several of their shots came from two power-play opportunities.

The Falcons scored the only goal of the second period at 6:52. Judy Daleiden broke in from the right point and Nordness hit her with a perfect pass that Daleiden hammered home. Jackson also had an assist on Daleiden's third goal of the year. The Falcons had an 11-9 advantage in shots in the period.

In the third Flanagan scored an unassisted goal at 6:51 with a slap shot from about 30 feet out. UWRF took a minor penalty at 10:16, but that didn't stop Mason from scoring her third of the game. She picked up a loose puck at mid ice, deked the goalie down and beat her with a forehand from in tight. The goal came at 11:38. It was her 10 goal of the year. The final goal came at 18:09. Katie Batters walked out from the right of the CU goal and lifted a back hand past the CU goalie from 10 feet out. Brook Story assisted on Batters' team best 15th goal of the year.

CU goalie, Andrea Mizakskey stopped 27 of 34 Falcon shots. UWRF, now 13-0 all time against Concordia, finished with a 34-26 advantage in shots on goal. CU was 1-4 and the Falcons 1-1 on the power play.
