Softball Team Splits at Whitewater

Falcons Win First Game, 5-0, Lose Second, 3-2

The Falcon softball team split a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Whitewater on Sunday afternoon winning the first game, 5-0, but losing the second, 3-2.

The Falcons, now 21-12 overall and 6-6 in the WIAC, will next host UW-La Crosse on Saturday at Ramer Field in the Hit For Lupus Game. The first pitch will be thrown at 2 p.m.

River Falls 5, Whitewater 0
The Falcons used the long ball, and solid pitching, to get the win over Whitewater. It was the first WIAC loss of the season for the Warhawks and snapped UWW's seven-game winning streak. The Warhawks entered the game ranked No. 15 in the NFCA Coaches poll. The loss was just the sixth of the year for UWW.

The Falcons scored three times in the fifth and twice in the sixth. UWRF scored five runs on six hits and made no errors. UWW had three hits and had no errors.

In the fifth, Lily Buckley hit a three-run homer to give the Falcons the lead. It was Buckley's first home run of the season. The homer scored Ashley Goettl, who led off the inning with a single, and Kristy Martinson who pinch ran for Jessie Bester who had singled.

Patty Olson hit a two-run homer in the sixth to center field. It was her fifth home run of the season. The homer scored Hayley Buchanan who had singled to center to lead off the inning.

Rose Tusa had a great effort on the mound. She worked six innings and allowed just three hits, all singles. She struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. She retired the last 10 batters she faced. Only one UWW runner reached second base. Tusa improved to 15-5. Abbie Morris pitched a perfect seventh inning retiring all three batters she faced.

Whitewater 3, River Falls 2
The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but UWW scored once in the third and twice in the sixth to get the come-from-behind win.

The Falcons scored two runs on seven hits and made two errors. The Warhawks scored three runs on eight hits and made no errors.

In the first, Buchanan led off with a walk and she was sacrificed to second by Amanda Ryder. Olson then hit a two-run homer to left to put the Falcons ahead.

UWW scored its run in the third using three singles. The two runs in the sixth were scored on two singles, a sacrifice and a Falcon error.

Olson was 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Ryder was 2-2 and Sarah Bolen was 2-3.

Tusa had another solid outing on the mound. She worked the first five innings and allowed six hits and one earned run. She struck out three and walked none. Morris pitched the sixth and took the loss, she is now 4-3. She allowed two hits and two runs, only one was earned.
