Five Falcons scored in double figures, led by Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona)'s double-double as the UWRF women's basketball team fended off WIAC foe UW-Stout 73-65 in overtime in Menonomie.
Gregorich had 15 points, 16 rebounds and three steals to pace the Falcons in the thrilling back-and-forth contest. During the final 4:35 of regulation, the lead changed seven times. Stout had an opportunity to win the game as time expired, but missed the final of two free throws to set up the overtime showdown.
Then in overtime it was all Falcons as they limited Stout to a mere six points in the five-minute overtime. The Falcons meanwhile, scored 14 to put the game away and snap a three-game losing streak. Their 14 points was on 12-18 from the free throw line and one field goal.
Richell Mehus (Spring Grove, MN, Spring Grove) added 15 points for UWRF, who had a steady night from the field. UWRF shot 20-61 from the field for 32.8 percent while Stout shot 20-55 for 36.4 percent. Mehus also added nine rebounds. As a team, the Falcons outrebounded the Blue Devils 51-39.
A big difference in the game was free throws. UWRF was 31-47 for an even 66 percent from the line. Gregorich was 9-11 to lead the Falcons. Stout was 21-32 for 65.6 percent. Jessie Van Wyhe (Albertville, MN, St. Michael-Albertville) added 13 points, Nikki Guhr (Muskego, WI, Muskego) 11 and Hailey Siegle (Waconia, MN, Mayer Lutheran) 10 to round-out the balanced scoring attack by the Falcons.
With the win the Falcons sweep the regular season series against the Blue Devils. On Dec. 12 the Falcons were victorious at the Karges Center, 72-61. UWRF improves to 10-9 on the season and 4-6 in the WIAC. Stout is now 8-11 and 2-8 in conference play.
The Falcons will return to action at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan, 26. They take on UW-Platteville in Platteville. On Dec. 1 the Falcons defeated the Pioneers 66-54 at the Karges Center.
