The Falcon offense and defense struggled in a 47-14 loss at UW- Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The rain did not spoil Homecoming, or affect the passing game for the Pointers, as they passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns. Pointer quarterback Mitch Beau connected with nine different receivers as he went 13-27 with no interceptions.
"This was a tough day for us in every phase," said Falcon Coach
Matt Walker. "We had a very poor start to the game offensively that put our defense in some bad siations and we never recovered."Â
Â
The Pointers struck first with a one-yard sneak by Beau making it 6-0 after a failed 2-point conversion. Less than 60 seconds later, Beau hit Matt Solinsky for a 55-yard touchdown pass to make it 13-0 after the successful extra point.
Â
In the second quarter, Beau hit Andy Kros, this time on an 11-yard pass making it 19-0 after the failed 2-point conversion.
Â
After a wild snap by the Pointer punt unit, the Falcons recovered the loose ball and started their drive on the Pointers one-yard line. Quarterback
Ryan Kusilek punched in for the score, making it 19-7 after the extra point.
Â
After half time, Stevens Point took over the game and scored 28 unanswered points, making it 47-7.
Â
The Falcons did answer with a 10 play, 75-yard drive that was capped off with a 1-yard
Phillip Martola run, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Â
Kusilek went 14-37 passing for 103 yards with one interception. Wide receiver
Jordan Christianson led the Falcon receivers with five catches for 68 yards.
Running back Adam Vesterfeld shined for the Pointers with 22 rushes for 80 yards. But the Falcons rushing game struggled with only 88 yards to the Pointers 159 yards on the ground.
Andy Lundgren led the Falcon defense with seven solo and 12 total tackles.
Isaac Neumann finished with 10 stops.
"We clearly have some work to do, but no one on this team or involved in this program is going to show any signs of quit," said Walker. "This is a classy group of young men who have remained dedicated to our goals. We are going to wipe the slate clean, learn from mistakes and prepare harder than we have ever prepared to right this ship. We have a ton of talent on this football team and we have to find ways to get them in positions to make plays and then make them when they have the opportunity."
The Falcons fall to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in WIAC play. Next Saturday is Homecoming for the Falcons as UW-Platteville comes to Ramer Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
