Men's Hockey Loses in Overtime at Augsburg - Audio Added

The Falcon men's hockey team lost its first game of the season to Augsburg College, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday night at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn.

Freshman forward Mike Fazio opened the scoring with his first career goal at 8:42 of the first period, with assists going to freshman forward Cory Lushanko and senior forward Alec Hagaman. Lushanko's assist was his first career point. Hear the call by WRFW's Chris Liermann.

The Falcons doubled their lead early in the second period with a goal from leading scorer Willie Hess. The junior forward found the back of the net for the fifth time this season at 1:13 of the second. The goal was also the 24th of his career. Junior forward Blake Huppert and freshman forward Ryan Doner assisted on the goal.

Doner's assist was his fifth of the year, giving him the team lead. Doner, just a freshman, has been piling up minutes and turning heads early in his first collegiate season. Huppert's point total is at five, following his third assist.

The Auggies pulled within one at 10:56 of the second period with a timely goal from sophomore forward Mack Ohnsted. The assists were credited to sophomore defenseman Lucas Hendrickson and junior forward George Jackson.

The momentum severely shifted when Auggies sophomore forward Carl Krieger tied the contest only 34 seconds into the third period. Assisting on the goal was senior forward Niklas Almstrom and sophomore forward Drew Allen.

The nail-biting final moments of the third period left the contest tied at 2.

In overtime, Augsburg junior forward Nicholas Widing scored his fifth goal of the season, ending the contest in dramatic fashion. The lone assist went to Ohnsted.

Augsburg junior goaltender John Bretzman and Falcons senior goaltender Scott Lewan kept the game low-scoring with timely saves throughout. Bretzman improved to 4-0-1, while Lewan's record fell to 2-1.

Hagaman led the Falcons with seven shots on goal, while sophomore forward Zach Schrotenboer added four. Huppert was extremely successful at the face-off circle tonight, winning 13 of his 18 face-offs.

UWRF outshot Augsburg 28-26.

Neither team was successful on the power play, as the team's combined to go 0-5.

UWRF (2-1-1) plays at Concordia University (2-2-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. in Mequon, Wis.
