Men's Hockey Earns 4-3 Win at Concordia

Murphy, Hess, Williams, Doner Net Goals; Murphy Has Two Point Night

Thirty-three saves from senior goaltender Scott Lewan and a two-point night from sophomore forward Alex Murphy helped the UWRF Falcons nab a 4-3 road win at Concordia University-Wisconsin on Friday night.

The Falcons never trailed as they built an early 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the first period.
Murphy started the scoring just 3:39 into the game, his first goal of his career. Freshman forward Mike Fazio had the lone assist, his second career point.

Junior forward Willie Hess scored his sixth goal of the year at 7:48 as he pushed the lead to 2-0. Hess has now scored in four consecutive games. The goal was a short-handed, unassisted tally.

Concordia got on the board late in the first period at 19:18, with a goal from sophomore forward Buster Hebda. Sophomore forward Kevin Michelcavage assisted Hebda on the goal.

UWRF blew the game open with two second period goals. The first coming from sophomore forward Mike Williams at 5:20. Williams' goal was his first of the year, and the third of his career.

Freshman forward Christian George and freshman defenseman Matt Wurst were credited with the assists. George and Wurst both notched their first collegiate point on the goal.

The Falcons widened the lead to 4-1 with a power play goal from freshman forward Ryan Doner. His second goal of the season came at 7:45. Murphy and freshman forward Taylor Burden earned assists. Burden now has five assists on the year, tying Doner for the team lead. Doner's seven points are a team-high; Hess also has seven points.

Concordia made things interesting in the third period with two late goals.

Hebda banged home his second of the game at 16:33, pulling Concordia within two. The assists went to senior defenseman Brandon Bayer and freshman defenseman Michael Chen.

With 32 seconds left in the contest Concordia sophomore forward Chris Hughes scored a power-play goal bringing the score to 4-3. Freshman forward Dylan Hutton and sophomore forward Devin Stuermer assisted Hughes on the late goal.

Despite allowing two late goals, Lewan and the Falcons played a complete game and earned a needed road victory.

The Falcons relied heavily on Lewan in the third period as Concordia outshot UWRF 21-4 in the period. Concordia also outshot the Falcons 33-25 overall for the game.

Doner and freshman forward Cory Lushanko led the Falcons with four shots on goal.

UWRF (3-1-1) play the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders (0-7) at 2 p.m., Saturday afternoon.
