Bethel Tops Women's Basketball Team, 70-61 - Video Added

The UWRF women's basketball team came up short in the fifth game of the season against Bethel University, 70-61, in the first home game of the season at the Karges Center.

The Falcons were able to take an early lead when Richell Mehus made a layup with about three minutes gone. UWRF and Bethel traded leads until Bethel was able to hold it with 11:18 left to play in the half. Bethel held the lead at the end of the half 26-18.

In the second half Bethel was able to continue to hold the lead, but the Falcons did make a run. With one minute left in the game the Falcons went on a 4-0 run, but Bethel held onto the lead for the victory.

Mehus led the Falcons in scoring, with 16 points, which ties her career high. She also went 9-10 from the line. Katie Messman scored the second most points for the Falcons with a total of nine, a career high. Messman also had two steals.

Bethel was lead in scoring by Katelyn Vavra, who had 15 points. Kalli Zimmermann and Rachel Parupsky also put up points in the double digits, with 12 points each.

The Falcons outrebounded the Royals, 50-38. But the difference came in shooting from the floor where the Falcons were 19-65 (.292) and Bethel finished 23-55 (.418).

UWRF opens WIAC play on Wednesday when they host UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m., at the Karges Center.
