Box Score

Junior forward Willie Hess' two second period goals helped the Falcons earn a tie against the visiting Hamline Pipers Saturday night at Hunt Arena in front of 694 fans.

Sophomore goaltender Tanner Milliron made his first career start for UWRF, marking the first time senior goaltender Scott Lewan has not started a game since his freshman year.

The first period was marred by penalties. The Falcons went 0-2 on the power play in the period, while the Hamline Pipers capitalized on one of their five chances.

Pipers sophomore forward Joe Moore opened the scoring on the power play at 10:39 of the first period. Moore received a pass from sophomore forward Kevin Novakovich in the slot, and beat Milliron five-hole to make it 1-0. Junior captain defenseman Joe Rubbelke was also credited with an assist.

Milliron looked sharp throughout the night, despite making his first collegiate start. His work on the penalty kill kept the game from getting out of reach early.

The Falcons were unable to find a rhythm in the first period, due to penalty trouble.

The second period was an entirely different story as Hess scored twice. The Falcons also outshot the Pipers 15-4.
Hess' first goal tied the game at one a piece, at 5:16 of the second period. Hess was fed at the top of the crease by freshman forward Taylor Burden, where Hess beat Pipers sophomore goaltender Nick Heimer glove side.
The goal was Hess' 20th of his career. Junior forward Blake Huppert was credited with the secondary assist. Burden's assist was his first career point. Hear WRFW's Chris Liermann on the call.

Hess struck again at 10:07 with a one-time power play goal. Freshman forward Ryan Doner sent a precise cross-ice pass and Hess buried it blocker side. Senior defenseman Jeff Burke also assisted on the play. Willie Hess 2nd Goal 11152013.mp3">Hear WRFW's Chris Liermann on the call.

Doner and Burke now have assists in consecutive games. Burke also hit the post, just minutes after Hess' second goal.

Novakovich later tied the contest at the 16:23 mark of the third period. He tipped home a nifty pass from Rubbelke. Junior forward Andrew Herbert was also credited with an assist on the tying goal. The goal gave Novakovich and Rubbelke two point evenings.

Hess nearly netted a hat-trick on a redirection late in the overtime period, but the attempt sailed wide.

The game featured two rare five minute majors for boarding; one called on each team. Both Hamline and UWRF scored once on their respective five minute power plays.

The final shots on goal were 33-28, in favor of the Falcons.

The Falcons (1-0-1) host Bethel University Friday at Hunt Arena with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m.
