The Falcons sought revenge entering tonight's contest, after the Pipers stole a win from UWRF on home ice when the two teams tied 2-2 on Nov. 9. A late goal from Hamline sophomore forward Kevin Novakovich tied that contest, helping the 1-9-1 Pipers earn a rare tie.
The Pipers opened the scoring, just 3:25 into the first period, with a goal from sophomore forward Brandon Zurn. Senior defenseman Grant Fahnhorst fed Zurn for the opening tally, which was his third of the season.
The Pipers entered the second period with a 1-0 lead, but exited trailing 3-1 following three straight UWRF goals.
Junior center
Blake Huppert tied the game only 27 seconds into the second frame when he redirected home a Burke point shot, which found its way through traffic and behind Pipers freshman goaltender John Sellie-Hanson. Kohn also earned an assist on the tying goal. Huppert's goal was his fifth of the season and 15th of his career. Burke's assist was his six of the year, while Kohn's assist was his second.
The Falcons grabbed a 2-1 lead at 6:36 of the second period, with a goal from freshman forward
Ryan Doner. Williams and Kontny were credited with the helpers. Doner's goal was his third of the season, giving him nine points in his rookie season.
Kontny later widened the lead with his fourth goal of the season at the 10:43 mark of the second period. Sophomore forward
Zach Schrotenboer found Kontny on the doorstep for the goal. Burke was also credited with an assist.
Kontny now leads all UWRF freshman with four goals, which is also good for third on the team behind junior forward
Willie Hess' eight goals and Huppert's five. Schrotenboer now has five assists, and points in four consecutive games.
Pipers sophomore goaltender Nick Heimer relieved Sellie-Hanson at the start of the third period.
Eight consecutive shots on goal for the Pipers were all stopped by sophomore goaltender
Tanner Milliron (3-0-1) early in the third period. Milliron turned in yet another fantastic performance, stopping 24 of 25 shots.
Hamline freshman forward Tyler Gonzales rang a shot off the post with 13 minutes left to play, rubbing salt in an open wound.
Williams' third goal of the season ended the Pipers' chances at 16:37 of the third period. Kohn and Burke assisted the Falcons' fourth goal of the game. Burke's three point night gives him nine on the season, while tonight was Kontny's first career two point game.
The final shots were 29-25, in favor of UWRF. Five Falcons registered three shots on goal. Both teams were 0-3 on the power play. UWRF dominated in the faceoff circle, going 41-23. Freshman center
Christian George polished off his evening winning 10 of 12 faceoffs.
