Women's Basketball Falls Short to Luther, 63-61

Siegle and Elles Combine for Eight Three Pointers

Despite a late game tying three point basket from Kristi Elles the UW-River Falls Falcons fell 63-61 against a tough Luther College Norse team that came into tonight with a 7-2 record.

Luther scored first when Tayler Jenks connected on a three pointer just eight seconds into the game which was answered by Elles when she hit a three of her own. Elles hit four threes and finished with 12 points. UWRF relied heavily on three pointers all game long going 10-32 (31%) including four from Hailey Siegle who led the team in scoring with 16 points.

Luther's leading scorer this season, Taylor Johnson, led the Norse in the first half with 12 points and five rebounds. She was contained in the second half not scoring anymore and adding three more rebounds.

Meagan Koepnick got things rolling for Luther right away in the second half hitting a three. She finished with 20 points and went 6-11 from the field and 3-6 from three point land. The Norse went 23-61 (37%) from the field and 5-10 (50%) from behind the arc. They also got to the charity stripe 26 times but only connected on 12 of them.

Richell Mehus got in on the three point frenzy early in the second half. Mehus finished with 7 points and added five rebounds and five assists.

Senior Tess Lueders had a big second half and helped UWRF climb back into the game off the bench with a double-double grabbing 13 rebounds and scoring 10 points.

With just over six minutes to go in the game Luther led by nine points when Lueders was able to hit a jumper and spark the Falcons. Then down by three with one minute to go Elles tied the game with a big three. With 23 seconds to go Jenks got to the free throw line for The Norse and connected on both. Sielge had a three point look with 10 seconds left but missed and with five seconds left UWRF turned the ball over on their final possession.

UWRF finished the game 23-71 (32%) from the field. They only attempted eight free throws and made five of them. Luther grabbed 50 rebounds and UWRF had 48 rebounds.

The Falcons drop to 3-8 overall on the season. They will start WIAC play back up when they play again at home next Saturday against UW-Whitewater with tip off set for 3 p.m. They are 2-1 overall in conference play this season.
