Geoff Shewmake scored the hat trick to help lead the Falcon men's hockey team to a 7-5 win at St. Scholastica on Saturday night.
Shewmake scored three even-strength goals in the high scoring contest that featued five power-play goals. Shewmake finished with a four-point game - adding an assist on the team's sixth goal. The 12 combined goals is the most in a Falcon game this year. The seven goals is the second most by the Falcons - they scored eight on opening night against Finlandia and seven on Dec. 13 against Augsburg.
The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and led 3-1 after one.
Alec Hagaman scored a power-play at 9:17 to give UWRF a 1-0 lead. It was Hagaman's sixth goal of the season and he was assisted by
Jeff Burke and
Jon Schreiner. About three minutes later the Falcons went ahead, 2-0, when
Geoff Shewmake scored his second goal of the year. He was assisted by Burke and
Ryan Goodmanson. Shewmake netted the team's third goal at 14:48 to make it a 3-0 game. Hagaman picked up the lone assist. CSS stopped the bleeding at 15:09 when Dylan Nowakowski scored. CSS had a 17-7 advantage in shots in the period but the Falcons made the most of their chances.
Early in the second stanza the Saints took a five minute major penalty and the Falcons scored twice during the advantage.
George Malliaras scored his first goal of the season at 1:40. He was assisted by
Blake Huppert and
Adam Cardwell. At 5:38 Cardwell scored his 15th goal of the season with assists to Malliaras and
Jake Calleja to put UWRF ahead, 5-1. CSS made it a 5-2 game at 8:41 when Chad Golanowski scored. The Saints got to within 5-3 with a power-play goal after the Falcons took a penalty with about four minutes to play in the period.
Brandon Nowakowski netted the goal at 16:37. But the Falcons regained the three-goal lead when Calleja scored his third goal of the season at 17:23. Shewmake and
Caleb Wolfgram picked up the assists. The Falcons had an 11-9 advantage in shots and the Falcons were 2-4 on the power play in the period.
The Saints drew to within one with two third period goals. The first came at 7:50 when Brett Corcoran scored. At 13:08 the Saints scored their second power-play goal of the game when Tyler Miller scored. Shewmake scored his third of the game at 16:25 with assists to Schreiner and Hagaman.
Falcon goalie
Scott Lewan made 29 saves to pick up the win. The Saints had a 34-21 advantage in shots for the game. UWRF finished 3-6 on the power play while the Saints were 2-5.
The Falcons, 12-9-4 overall, finished 5-9-4 in NCHA play. The Falcons enter NCHA tournament play next weekend. They will play at UW-Stevens Point in a best two-out-of-three games series. Dates and times will be determined.
