Women's Hockey Advances to O'Brien Cup Finals After 7-0 Victory

Gillian McDonald Records Shutout in Semi Final Win

Gillian McDonald recorded a shutout in the 7-0 win over UW-Stevens Point for UW-River Falls tonight to help them move onto the O'Brien Cup Finals.

Amanda Ryder went top shelf early in the first period at 3:38 off of the Kait Mason assist for the only goal of the first period. UWRF recorded 11 shots on goal in the period only giving up four shots on goal by UWSP.

The Falcons special teams played strong in the second period killing three Pointer power play opportunities. They also scored on a power play opportunity at 15:57 of the period when Sam Greeley scored her third goal of the season. Kendal Evenson and Mason were credited with the assists on the play.

Toward the end of the second period at 18:59 Alyssa Black tipped in a shot from the blue line by Ryder to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead going into the third.

UWRF stayed on the attack in third when Katie Batters scored her 21st goal of the season off of assists by Brook Story and Judy Daledian. Leah Gefroh added another goal at 8:09 off the Story and Batters assists.

With their backs against the wall in a win or go home game UWSP pulled goalie Janna Beilke-Skoug at 10:43 of the period. She sat out for a total of 6:47 in the period and finished with 21 saves in the game. UWRF played strong defense not giving up a goal skating five on six. Falcon Goalie McDonald finished the game with 20 saves.

Mason scored two empty goals at 10:58 and 18:43 to seal the 7-0 win for UWRF. She finished the game with four total points and has 20 goals on the season.

River Falls will play St. Norbert College tomorrow with the O'Brien Cup Championship and an automatic bid into the national tournament on the line. The puck is set to drop at 4:05 p.m.
