The Falcon women's hockey team had a strong game, but lost a 2-1 decision at Gustavus Adolphus in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a great game," said Falcon Coach
Joe Cranston. "We had a lot of quality scoring chances and just couldn't get a bounce in the first two periods. Everyone had a great effort. It was nice to have such a great crowd with over half of them Falcon fans."
The two teams were tied, 1-1, after the first period.
GAC's Melissa Doyle scored off a rebound at 5:15. Falcon goalie
Gillian McDonald made the initial save on a 35 foot slapper by Lindsey Hjelm, but could not find the rebound, and Doyle tapped the puck home.

Alice Cranston took a tripping penalty to put the Gusties on a power play. The Gusties put just one shot on goal that McDonald handled easilly.
With 5:45 left the Falcons had a 2-1 and Batters' hard wrist shot went off GAC goalie, Lindsey Hibbard's, mask.
Chloe Kinsel was left alone in front of the GAC net, but her shot went wide left with about 3:30 to play. About a minute later Batters put another hard wrist shot on goal that Hibbard was able to stop.
The Falcons broke through with 2:19 left in the period when
Judy Daleiden scored off a long shot from the point.
Amanda Ryder and Cranston got the assists on Daleiden's second goal of the season.
The Falcons, ranked No. 7 in the country, dominated play in the second half of the period but the Gusties had an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. GAC did not have a shot on goal for the last half of the period.
In the first five minutes of the second period the Falcons had the territorial advantage and a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
GAC took a 2-1 lead at 11:01 when Leah Johnson scored off a tip from a shot by Maddie Bergh from the point. That proved to be the game-winning goal. Two minutes later the Gusties worked a 2-1 to near perfection, but McDonald slid acorss to make the save.
The Falcons then put on pressure and at 13:33 GAC's Amanda Cartony took a roughing penalty to put UWRF on its first power play. The the man advantage was short lived when Batters took a holding penalty 28 seconds later. During the 4-4 Mason broke in alone but Hibbard was able to make the save and keep her team in the lead. The teams skated 5-5 from about 10 seconds but then UWRF's
Alyssa Jackson was called for tripping putting GAC on its second power play. The Falcons killed off the peanlty allowing just one shot on goal.
The Falcons had an 11-8 advantage in shots in the second stanza.
At 2:46 of the third period GAC's Carolyn Draayer was called for checking putting the Falcons on their second power play of the game. But the Gusties, ranked No. 2 in the nation, were able to kill off the penalty. There was no scoring in the third period and GAC held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
McDonald, now 11-3-1, had 22 saves while Hibbard stopped 21 shots.
