Softball Drops a Pair of Games to No. 13 Whitewater in Final WIAC game

The Falcons concluded their 2013 regular season with a double-header against the No. 13 ranked Warhawks at Ramer Field. The Falcons lost both games to drop to 6-10 in the WIAC. They are currently tied with Superior for sixth in the conference with records of 6-10. Stevens Point sits at 5-9 with a double-header against Oshkosh on Wednesday which will determine which team grabs the final playoff spot in the WIAC Tournament. The top six teams in the conference make the WIAC Tournament.
  
Whitewater 9, UWRF 1
 
The Falcons ran into the WIAC's top pitcher in game one as Katie Boyle picked up her 14th win of the season as the Falcons fell to No. 13 Whitewater 9-1 in five innings. The Falcons lone run came on a solo shot by Amber O'Connell in the bottom of the second – her first home run of the season.
 
O'Connell's home run cut the deficit to 3-1 before the Warhawks scored six unanswered runs. Defensively, the Falcons committed three errors which led to a pair of unearned runs as Andrea Krause recorded her first loss of 2013.
 
O'Connell had two of the Falcons four hits as she also singled in the bottom of the third. Shawna Middleton and  Nicole Lubahn had the other two hits for River Falls.
 
Krause pitched 3.1 innings and allowed four earned runs while Brooke Lauritzen tossed the final 1.2 innings in relief allowing three earned runs in the loss.
 
 
Whitewater 7, UWRF 5 
 
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons rallied for five runs to take a late 5-2 lead over No. 13 Whitewater. The Warhawks answered in the top half of the fifth, crossing five runs of their own to recapture the lead and hold on for a 7-5 win in the final regular season game for both teams.
 
The Falcons loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth as Lily Buckley hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Sarah Sorensen to cut the lead to 2-1. Later in the inning, Abby Veloske drew a walk to score Ashley Goettl and tie the game at 2-2.
 
With the score even at two and the bases full, Sarah Bohlen gave the Falcons the lead on a two-run single – giving her a team-best 33 RBI on the season. O'Connell followed with an RBI-single to score Lubahn and give the Falcons the 5-2 edge with three innings to play.
 
The Falcons put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the seventh but came up short as Whitewater completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory.
 
Lauren Janssen tossed three scoreless innings in relief on three hits and a strikeout. The Falcons had six hits, with Bohlen going 2-for-4 with the two RBIs in the fourth. Haley Selkirk, Kristy Martinson, Goettl, Middleton, and O'Connell had the other base hits for River Falls.
 
The Falcons finished the regular season at 6-10 in the WIAC and 21-15 overall. The first five spots are set for the WIAC playoffs and the final spot will be determined following Wednesday's double-header between Stevens Point and Oshkosh.
