Men's Hockey Ties St. Scholastica 3-3 on Hunt Arena's 40th Birthday Celebration

UWRF Scores Two Goals in Three Minutes to Start Game

Box Score

In the 40th birthday celebration of Hunt Arena the UW-River Falls Falcons got out to a hot start scoring two goals in the matter of minutes but gave up two third period goals in a 3-3 tie against the College of St. Scholastica.

Willie Hess found the back of the net for his tenth goal of the season on only the second Falcon shot of the game at 1:25 into the game. Jeff Burke and Blake Huppert were credited with assists on the goal. Burke has a team high nine assists this season.

Just moments later at 3:01 Zach Schrotenboer lit the lamp for an unassisted his goal which was his fifth of the season.

After a dominating quick start UWRF sputtered a bit on offense the rest of the period. They gave up a goal to the Saints when Justin Krabben scored on a power play opportunity assisted by Paul Marcoux and Alex Valenti. The power play goal was the only one of the game as CSS went 1-3 on their chances and UWRF went 0-2 on their power play opportunities. The game was full of big hits but was played clean throughout with only the five penalties between the two teams.

At around the seven minute mark UWRF pulled their goalie after a CSS penalty and took advantage of having the extra skater on the ice. Jeff Bergh sniped a shot into the back of the net for his first career goal. Alec Hagaman recorded his fourth assist of the season on the goal.

Mike Williams made a great move toward the end of the second period and attempted a backhand that hit the top of the pipe and went out. The lamp lit up for a second and the horn even went off as if he had scored but the refs quickly waved it off and play continued.

UWRF took a 3-1 lead going into the third period and despite CSS keeping the puck in the Falcon zone played strong defense and got a solid performance out of Tanner Milliron who finished the game with 19 saves. It was not until the 12:57 mark that Brandon Nowakowski was able to go top shelf and pull the Saints within one goal.

At 15:58 a flurry of players got bunched up in front of the Falcon net and Chad Golanowski was able to put one past Milliron.
In overtime both teams got two shots on goal but could not break the tie. Willie Hess and Jon Schreiner had a two on once chance but Schreiner just barley lost control of the puck and could not get a shot off.

Tyler Bruggeman played in net for CSS and recorded 20 saves in the tie. UWRF had one more shot than CSS (23-22) in the game.

The Saints came into the game ranked 14th in nation and the tie moves their record to 9-3-3. UWRF came into the game ranked 13th in the nation and are now 9-3-2 overall on the season. The Falcons will play again next weekend in a WIAC weekend series at home against UW-Stevens Point. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 both Friday and Saturday.
