Women's Volleyball Loses to UW-Stout 3-1

Junior Lisa Keppers had a strong afternoon, but the Blue Devils were too much in the 3-1 defeat.

The UW-River Falls women's volleyball team was defeated by the UW-Stout Blue Devils, 3-1, in the third and final game of the 2014 UW-River Falls Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Karges Center.

The Blue Devils won the first set after scoring 10 consecutive points to close out the set. Stout trailed 20-15 and the Falcons were dominating before the collapse. Falcons junior Rebecca Gasper was dominant again as she killed four balls in the set, but was on the sidelines for the 10-point turn-around. After trailing 5-8, the Falcons put together a 15-7 run and were dominant in that stretch. The Falcons' largest lead was five. Junior Brianna Muetzel, sophomore Katie Duff and junior Lisa Keppers all had two kills in the set.

 
The Falcons took care of business in the second set, winning 25-13. UWRF opened the set winning 11 of the first 13 points. Keppers had four kills and two blocks in the second set. UWRF won the last four points of the set after Stout made a mild comeback midway through. The Blue Devils looked shaky in the second set after winning 10 straight points to finish the first. The Falcons looked like the better team in both sets. Junior Lexi Pingel made some key digs in the second.
 
Another a monumental comeback by the Blue Devils resulted in a 25-20 victory in set three. Stout trailed 19-16, but won nine of the last 10 points, including the last five. For the second time of the match UWRF lost a late lead. Keppers was quite good for UWRF in the set, finishing with four kills. The Falcons also held a 15-11 lead after a 8-4 run midway through the set. Muetzel, Gasper and junior Molly Monahan had two kills in the set.
 
The fourth set was the best of the day for Stout as the Blue Devils prevailed 25-21, leading much of the way. After leading 10-9, the Falcons were quickly outscored 7-3, giving the Blue Devils a 16-13 lead. The two teams exchanged blows and the Falcons were never able to get closer than two points. Muetzel had four kills in the set, and Keppers and Duff had three. Gasper, who shined in the first match of the UW-River Falls Tournament, was on the bench for much of the action.

Keppers led the Falcons with 14 kills while adding three blocks. Muetzel led UWRF with 21 digs, adding nine kills and two blocks. Sophomore Raven Klein had 34 assists and the team's only ace. Duff had 11 kills and Pingel had 19 digs. Gasper had nine kills and four blocks. Monahan led the Falcons with five blocks, adding six kills and 14 digs.

 
UWRF falls to 9-14 overall, 3-3 at home, and have now lost seven straight matches. The Falcons won the first matchup this season on Oct. 1, 3-2, but fall to 57-30 all-time against Stout. The Blue Devils improve to 19-7 overall, 4-2 on the road, and have now won five straight matches.

The Falcons host the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds on Wednesday, Oct. 22, in a big WIAC matchup. The match begins at 7 p.m. Only three conference matches remain in the regular season for UWRF.
