Box Score The UW-River Falls women's volleyball team dropped its first game of the 2014 UW-Oshkosh Tournament to the Clarke University Crusaders Saturday morning after five highly contested sets.
The two teams traded set victories as Clarke, out of Dubuque, Iowa, won sets one, three and five. The match-deciding fifth set was narrowly won by the senior-laden Crusaders 15-13.
Clarke took set number one by a score of 25-17. The Crusaders were strong in the first, posting a 34.5 attack percentage with only three errors. UWRF bounced back to take the second set 25-20, its best set of the morning with only three errors and a 41.7 attack percentage. The Crusaders narrowly won the third set 25-23 after UWRF had seven unforced errors. UWRF kept the match alive with a 25-22 set number four victory; the Falcons had 13 kills in the set. The fifth set went Clarke's way, 15-13, after the Falcons made two too many mistakes.
Sophomore
Tayler Fertig had a strong match, leading the Falcons with 13.5 points and 13 kills. Junior
Lisa Keppers had 13 points, 12 kills and two blocks. Junior
Brianna Muetzel finished with 10.5 points, eight kills and 11 digs. Junior
Lexi Pingel led UWRF with 20 digs and two aces, adding three assists. Sophomore
Raven Klein had 50 assists, eight digs and one ace. Junior
Rebecca Gasper finished with 7.5 points and six kills. Sophomore
Hali Tasler added six kills and sophomore
Michaela Piechowski finished with eight digs and one ace.
Senior Elle Kosciuk led the Crusaders with 20 points, 14 kills and eight blocks; senior Corrin Larkin led with 22 assists; and senior Molly Bender led with 13 digs and three aces. The Falcons were out-blocked 23-6 in the match, probably the difference in the match.
UWRF drops to 11-16 overall, 7-6 on a neutral court, and 2-1 in the tournament, while snapping its brief two-match winning streak. The Crusaders improve to 20-11 overall, 9-6 on a neutral court, 2-1 in the tournament, and snap its brief one-match losing streak. Clarke now holds a 2-1 all-time record against the Falcons.
The Falcons cap off the UW-Oshkosh Tournament at noon today against the Webster University Gorloks (17-11).
