Women's Basketball Gets Win at Martin Luther

The Falcon women's basketball team won its second straight game with an 80-71 win at Martin Luther College on Tuesday night.

The Knights were able to take the early lead and held it until Tess Lueders tied the game up, 10-10, with 15:54 left to play in the first half. Both teams switched taking the lead back and forth throughout the half - the game was tied five times in the first 20 minutes.

The Falcons were able to take the lead and hold it when Katie Messman made a layup with 6:09 left to play. The Falcons had the lead at the half 32-26. UWRF went on a 7-0 run and led, 24-18, with 4:44 to play. UWRF had two eight-point leads in the first half, the last coming with nine seconds left when Taylor Augustine hit a jumper, 32-24.

UWRF had comtrol of the game for most of the second half. MLC made a run and trailed bu just two points, 61-59, with 5:13 to play. But then the Falcons went on a 7-1 run and led, 68-60, with 3:06 to play. In the last two minutes of the game the Falcons were 10-15 at the line to secure the win.

Lueders led the Falcons in scoring with 20 points. Also scoring in double digits was Kate Theisen who scored a season and career high 16 points. She also added a career-high nine rebounds and four steals off the bench in a solid all-around effort. Cassy Saxton scored a season and career-high 14 points and Messman equaled her season and career high with 10 points.

The Falcons went 26-65 (.400) from the field, and 4-21(.190) from behind the arc. The Falcons won the game at the line making 24-31 (.774) free throws. MLC was just 11-22 at the line. Lueders and Hailey Siegle each had seven rebounds.

Hannah Hackbarth led the Knights in scoring with 15 points. Also scoring in the double digits were Brittney Gossen and Faith Schroeder with 14 points each.

The Falcons, now 6-16 overall, will return to WIAC play on Saturday with a game at UW-Stevens Point. The Falcons are 4-9 in conference play and tied for sixth place in the WIAC standings. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
