Women’s Hockey Team Tops St. Catherine, 5-2

Chloe Kinsel and Katie Batters tally one goal and two assists each. The Falcons improved to 17-4-3, and are one win away from a WIAC title.

The UW-River Falls women's hockey team overpowered the St. Catherine University Wildcats in a 5-2 victory in St. Paul, Minn. on Tuesday evening.
 
The Falcons used a four goal second period in route to their final non-conference win of the regular season. Sophomore forward Chloe Kinsel and senior captain forward Katie Batters led the way with one goal and two assists each. Kinsel scored the game-winning-goal with 8:27 left in the second period, which, at the moment, pushed the Falcon lead to 3-1.
 
The Wildcats were overwhelmed all evening by the speedy, skilled Falcons forwards. Fifth nationally ranked UW-River Falls outshot St. Catherine, 51-16.
 
Falcons senior captain forward Kait Mason opened the scoring just 1:34 into the second period with an assist to Kinsel. Mason's tie-breaking goal was her ninth of the season, and 64th of her career. Kinsel's helper was her 10th.
 
Freshman forward Jenna Ulberg buried her second career goal at 5:24 of the second period, doubling the Falcon lead. She was assisted by Mason and Kinsel. Mason's assist was her team-leading 13th.
 
The Wildcat power play brought St. Catherine within one goal at the 7:58 mark of the second period. Sophomore forward Annie Buttermore pushed the puck past Falcons sophomore goaltender Gillian McDonald (4-2), with assists to sophomore defenseman Randi Fabsits and junior forward Megan Killmer. Buttermore's power play tally was her fourth.
 
Kinsel's game-winning-goal was scored at 11:33 of the second period, as she slapped a shot behind Wildcats goaltender Samantha Geissler (5-5). The power play goal was assisted by junior defenseman Sam Greeley and Batters. The goal was Kinsel's 12th of the season and third on the power play. Greeley's assist was her sixth.
 
The Wildcats answered shortly after the Kinsel goal with another power play tally at 15:58 of the second period. Freshman forward Jordan Solheim slipped the puck by McDonald for her seventh of the season. The goal was assisted by junior forward Bailey Rasmussen and sophomore defenseman Maureen Ryan.
 
Batters answered the call, just 45 seconds later, as she buried her team-leading 15th goal of the year underneath Wildcats freshman goaltender Abbi White. Batters' goal was an unassisted tally, and her 66th career goal.
 
Greeley put the nail in the coffin with 7:16 left in regulation with a power play goal, assisted by Batters and junior defenseman Kendal Evenson. The goal was Greeley's third of the year, and seventh of her career. Batters bumped her assist total to 11, while Evenson's assist was her seventh.
 
The Falcons outshot the Wildcats 16-5, 20-7 and 15-4 in the respective periods. McDonald earned her fourth win of the season on 14 saves. Geissler took the loss in net, making 29 saves, while White made 17 saves on 19 shots.
 
Mason and freshman forward Brianna Breiland led the Falcons with six shots on goal each. Six Wildcats registered two shots on goal apiece. Batters led all Falcons with 10 faceoff wins, while Mason went 3-6. Both teams had good nights on the power play, as UW-River Falls went 2-2, and St. Catherine went 2-5.
 
UW-River Falls improved to 17-4-3 overall, 10-2 on the road and have now won four straight. St. Catherine fell to 11-11-1 overall, 6-5-1 at home and have now lost two straight games.
 
UW-River Falls is now 12-2-1 all-time against the Wildcats.
 
The Falcons polish off their impressive regular season against in the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds on Saturday afternoon in Eau Claire, Wis. The puck drops at 2 p.m. UW-River Falls would become the 2013-2014 WIAC regular season champs with a road victory.
