Softball Drops Two Games Against Whitewater

Morris Nears Falcon Single Season Home Run Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The UW-River Falls Falcon softball team took two tough losses to one of the best teams in the WIAC in UW-Whitewater this evening.

The Falcons (15-16) dropped the first game 9-2 and the second game 8-0 to Whitewater (22-7).

First Game: Whitewater 9, UWRF 2

The Falcons started the game out hot by scoring two runs and had three of their six hits in the top of the first inning. After two quick outs Sarah Bohlen and Abbie Morris hit back to back home runs. Bohlen now has six home runs on the season. Morris continues to move towards the single season Falcon home run record as she now has 11 on the season. The record is at 12 and is currently held by three former UWRF players. The single season WIAC record is 15 home runs in one season. The Falcons still have eight regular season games scheduled this year.

Whitewater quickly answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first and kept on the pace with three more runs in the second inning.

UWRF got one hit in the second, third and fourth innings each and failed to get any hits the last three innings of the game against a strong performance from Kelynn Sporer who pitched all seven innings with five strike outs and only allowed six hits.

Brooke Lauritzen took the loss on the mound for UWRF and drops to 3-5 on the season. Lauren Janssen pitched the final four innings for the Falcons going four innings while allowing eight hits and four runs, two of which were earned.

Bohlen went 2-2 in the game at bat.

Second Game: Whitewater 8, UWRF 0 (five innings)

Whitewater's Bekka Houda pitched a strong game only allowing one Falcon hit in five innings of play while striking out four batters.

UWRF looked to have a chance to score in the first inning when both Amber O'Connell and Sarah Bohlen were walked but could not manage to get a hit.
Whitewater scored two runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to the early lead.

The Falcons again had an opportunity to score when Sarah Sorensen was walked right away and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Abby Veloske and Ali Murray was walked. The hitting struggles continued, however, and UWRF could not take advantage.

Whitewater scored three runs on four hits including a two run home run in the second inning. They kept the momentum going into the third inning by scoring two more runs.

The lone Falcons hit came from Michelle LaCasse in the fifth inning when she singled to right field but Whitewater was able to make a double play to end the inning soon after.
Morris, Janssen and LaCasse all pitched in the game. Morris took the loss and drops to 6-7 on the season.

The Falcons will play UW-Eau Claire in a double header at home on Monday, April 21, with the first pitch set for 3 p.m. Eau Claire sits in fifth place in the WIAC with a 4-4 conference record while the Falcons are in seventh with a 2-6 conference record.
