Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to UW-Oshkosh 59-57

Three Falcons finish in double figures but UW-River Falls drops yet another close ball game, this time at the hands of rival UW-Oshkosh.

The UW-River Falls men's basketball team dropped yet another heartbreaker on Wednesday evening in a 59-57 loss to the UW-Oshkosh Titans.

The visiting Falcons trailed by two points at half and came two points away from sending the highly contested WIAC contest to overtime. Three Falcons finished with double-digit point totals, including 14 points from junior forward Jon Christensen, 12 points from freshman guard CJ Lewis and 11 points from junior center Connor Goodwin. Christensen led both teams with his 14 points on 3-5 shooting, while also going 6-8 at the free throw line. Christensen also added five rebounds and four assists.

The Falcons finished 19-45 from the field, good for 42.2 percent, 2.4 percent lower than Oshkosh. The Falcons shot 40 percent from three point land and hit 13 free throws, while also outrebounding Oshkosh 36-28. Oshkosh finished with 30 points in the paint to UWRF's 14. The game featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes.

Oshkosh opened the game with a 11-6 run, but the Falcons responded with eight straight points to gain a 14-11 lead. The Titans carried a 28-26 halftime lead. UWRF held a 40-34 lead with under 13 minutes left in the second half, but went on a cold streak soon thereafter. Falcons junior forward Jack Herum missed a two-point jump shot with two seconds left in regulation, which would have tied the contest.

Goodwin led UWRF with six total rebounds, while going 5-6 from the field. Falcons sophomore point guard Grant Erickson led UWRF with five assists, but missed six free throws. Herum went 2-3 from the field, and grabbed five rebounds, including three offensive rebounds. The Titans were led by sophomore guard Kyle Bolger's 12 points.

UWRF drops to 5-9 overall, 3-2 in the WIAC and 2-5 on the road. Oshkosh improves to 8-5 overall, 2-2 in the WIAC and 5-3 at home.

The Falcons hit the road this Saturday to take on the UW-Plateville Pioneers with the tip scheduled for 7 p.m. The Pioneers are 86-31 all-time against UWRF.
