Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons men's hockey team played against Northland College's hockey team for the second game of the season. The Falcons won over the Lumberjacks in a blaze of glory, 5-1.
Senior
Tanner Milliron started the game between the pipes for the Falcons, as he did for the first game and stayed there for the duration of the game. Milliron stopped an incredible 21 of the 22 shots the Lumberjack's were able to put on net.
The goal scorers for the Falcons were Burden, Matsushima, Kontny, Drapluk, and Burden again.
The first period was a powered start for both teams. The Falcons started with 8 shots on goal, the Lumberjacks with 7. UWRF opened up the scoring at the 5:29 mark when
Taylor Burden buried the puck past the Lumberjacks goaltender, he was assisted by
Ryan Gotelaere and
Mitch Kontny on the goal. Even though the Falcons held onto their lead of 1-0, the rest of the period was spent with the two teams battling for the winning edge.
The second period, the Falcons were determined to pull ahead with 14 shots, but the Lumberjacks were equally as determined to stay in the game with 9. There were three goals scored in this period. The first was UWRF player
Eddie Matsushima at 9:29 assisted by
Mike Fazio and
Zach Schrotenboer. Before a minute had gone by, the Lumberjacks came back at 10:15. Again, another minute later, the Falcons got another goal. At 11:21,
Mitch Kontny was assisted by
Joe Drapluk, giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead.
The third period is where the tables really started to turn in the Falcons' favor, they gained momentum, and pulled ahead of the Lumberjacks with a comfortable cushion of two more goals on top of the previous 3 scored. Six minutes into this period,
Joe Drapluk slammed the puck past the goalie assisted by
Michael Lant. The final goals scored in the game was shot by
Taylor Burden, now his second goal of the game, and he was assisted by
Mitch Kontny and
Joe Drapluk, who scored the previous goal.
Matsushima led the Falcons with four shots on goal, one of those being a goal, and right behind him with three shots each were players Burden, whose two out of three shots were goals, Williams, and Dober. There were 0 goals scored on the 5 power plays and 7 penalties totaling 14 minutes.
The Falcons (1-0-1) are back in action on Friday, November 6
th with a 'home field' advantage against University of St. Thomas' Tommies. The puck-drop is set for 7 P.M.
