Box Score

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com)- The University of Wisconsin-River Falls women's basketball team opened up its home-portion of the schedule by hosting the Carleton College Knights at Karges Center.

The Falcons won their home opener by defeating the Knights 73-56.

Just like in the previous game against Hamline University, junior guard Brynn Liljander opened up the scoring for the Falcons by hitting a three pointer.

On the offensive end, the Falcons shared the ball to the tune of five different players getting into the scoring column. Along with Liljander, sophomore forward Taylor Karge, junior post Ali Clark, senior guard Richell Mehus, and junior guard Katie Messman contributed to the 20-point first quarter.

The Falcons were able to get a lead as large as 11 points in the late stages of the first quarter, but Carleton was able to score six straight points to cut the Falcon lead to five at the end of the first quarter.

The Knights were able to continue their run in the early stages of the second quarter to tie the game at 20, but the Falcons scored seven straight points of their own. The run was keyed by a Messman three-pointer and a layup from sophomore post-reserve Hayley Rau.

At the end of two quarters, the Falcons led the Knights 32-26.

In the third quarter, the Falcons consistently had a lead of eight to ten points. Like the first quarter, several different Falcons scored a point. The same arsenal of players of Liljander, Karge, Clark, Mehus, and Messman helped the Falcons increase the lead to ten at the end of the third quarter.

UWRF used a big fourth quarter to put away the Knights. The Falcons largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter on two separate occasions when they led by 20 points. The final lead for the Falcons was 17.

Liljander was the leading scorer for the Falcons, as she tallied 23 points. Karge and Messman followed suit by scoring 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Falcons outrebounded the Knights 34-30. UWRF was also able to edge Carleton in points in the paint, bench points, and second chance points.

UWRF improves its record to 2-0 for the first time since the 2011-2012 season where that version of the Falcons was able to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The Falcons are back in action on Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21, when they travel to the Gustavus Adolphus Tournament in St. Peter, Minn. The Falcons square off against Simpson College on Friday, and the tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
