Abbie Morris threw a no hitter in the UW-River Falls Falcons first game of the year in a game they topped Augsburg College 9-1 in only five innings. UWRF went on to beat Carleton College 7-6 in their second game of the day.
Kaitlyn LePine had a big day for UWRF hitting a home run on her first at bat of the season and two doubles in the second game of the year with five RBIs on the day.
First Game: UWRF 9, Augsburg 1After a slow first inning the Falcons had a big second inning scoring five runs on five hits.
Brooke Lauritzen got things going with a single right away. LePine was up next and took her first at bat of the whole season out of the park with a home run to left center.
Sarah Sorensen and
Ali Murray kept the hot bats going for UWRF each hitting singles on the next at bats.
Michelle LaCasse singled to bring in Sorensen and after two outs a throwing error brought in two more runs for the Falcons.
The lone Auggies run came in the bottom of the second inning after four straight walks. Despite throwing seven walks in the game Morris was untouchable on the mound. She threw ten strikeouts without allowing a hit in the five innings of work for UWRF.
Morris helped herself out by hitting a three shot home run to left center in the top of the fourth inning brining in
Amber O'Connell and
Hannah Zurn. Later in the inning Lauritzen hit a double and was brought home by a LePine single.
Lauritzen and Lepine each went 2-3 in the game and Sorensen, Zurn and
Toni Lubahn all had steals.
Second Game: UWRF 7, Carleton 6The Falcons survived a late game push from Carleton after a strong start to the game. Carleton scored a run in the top of the first inning but UWRF answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning thanks in part to two quick errors that put O'Connell and Murray on base. O'Connell scored on a fielders choice and later in the inning LePine doubled to bring in two more runs.
Carleton pulled within one after the top of the third but again UWRF answered by scoring a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Sorensen double that brought home
Kati Stodolka.
Again Carleton pulled within one run after the top of the fifth. UWRF scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth by getting runners on early in the inning and scored two runs due to a wild pitch.
Carleton made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh by scoring two quick runs with no outs. With one out and runners on second and the Falcons decided to walk the next batter. The move paid off as the Falcons fielded a double play to end the game.
LePine went 2-2 in the game with two doubles and two RBIs while Sorenson and
Abby Veloske each picked up an RBI as well. Lauritizen got the win on the mound allowing four hits in four innings of work and striking out two batters.
UWRF will head back to Rochester, Minn. tomorrow for two more games. They will play Gustavus Adolphus College at 9 a.m. and St. Catherine University at 11:30 a.m.
