Softball Takes Two Wins As LePine Hits Walk Off In First, Sorensen Grand Slams In Second

Falcons Top Macalester in Eight Innings 7-6, Beat Utica In Five Innings 8-0.

The UW-River Falls Falcons won both their games today topping Macalester College 7-6 in eight innings with Kaitlyn LePine hitting a walk off single and beating Utica College in just five innings 8-0 with Sarah Sorensen sending a grand slam out of the park.

First Game- UWRF 7, Macalester 6

UWRF was down 5-2 going into the bottom of the sixth and scored three runs to tie it up. After Macalester scored a run in the seventh the Falcons came back with a run of their own and won in the eighth when LePine hit a walk off single.

"In the first game today we played a tough Macalester team," said Falcon Assistant Coach Pam Latterell. "We came back strong to tie it and took it into the international tiebreaker. We successfully executed for the go ahead run."

The international tiebreaker rule puts the last batter to get an out in the inning before on second base to start the inning during extra inning play.

The Falcons had a great chance to score in the bottom of the second with three runners on base but Macalester got out of the pinch to keep the game tied and came out strong in the top of the third inning scoring the games first runs.

Aiyana Ledwain started out the bottom of the third with a single for UWRF. Abbie Morris was walked on the next at bat. Macalester was able to get two outs the next two at bats before a LePine double brought in a run and an Amber O'Connell single brought in another to tie the game 2-2 after three.

Macalester added a run in the fourth. A crazy play took place in the top of the sixth when a Macalester player took a deep shot to left field which Katie Thompson jumped up and initially grabbed but caught the fence to her stomach and dropped the ball over the fence resulting in a three run home run for Macalester.

The Falcons started the bottom of the sixth with three straight singles from O'Connell, Michelle LaCasse and Ali Murray. An error on the next at bat brought in two runs. Morris hit a sac fly to bring in the tying run later in the inning.

After Macalester scored a run in the top of the seventh UWRF again tied the game in the bottom of the inning when LaCasse hit a single to bring in Brooke Lauritzen.

The Falcons defense stayed strong in the eighth to not allow a run and LePine ripped the walk off single in the bottom of the inning to bring in Sorensen.

"Several Falcons had multiple hits in the game and we had strong team hitting in the sixth inning to tie the game," Latterell said.  "We also had tough defense to stall out Macalester in the eighth inning."

Lauritzen went 3-4 with a double, LaCasse went 3-3, O'Connell 2-3 and Thompson 2-4 in a game where UWRF had 14 team hits. Lauren Janssen got the start on the mound going four innings and giving up three

earned runs, LaCasse went 2.1 innings with three earned runs and Morris got the win pitching the final 1.2 innings.

Second Game- UWRF 8, Utica 0

It only took five innings for the Falcons to win the second game with a big five run fourth inning thanks to Sorensen's grand slam.

"The Falcons kept the momentum going after a strong first game keeping the hot bats going into the second game," Latterell said.  "Sorensen was the highlight of the game with the grand slam and Morris was tough on the mound with Lauritzen coming in strong in the final inning to shut them down."

Morris only gave up one hit in four innings of work and struck out five batters while Lauritzen did not allow a hit in the final inning. Morris improves to 4-2 on the season and also helped her cause with two doubles in the game.

In the top of the third Morris hit a double that brought in the games first two runs. The first run of the fourth inning came on a walk with Sorensen's grand slam to follow. The final run came in the fifth inning when a Thompson single brought in Lauritzen.

UWRF hits the field for two more games tomorrow with the first one at 1 p.m. ET against Amherst College and the second to follow against Ripon College.
