Thompson Keeps Hot Bat Going As Softball Splits

Falcons Wins 9-6 Over Concordia, Falls 7-2 To McDaniel

The UW-River Falls Falcons beat Concordia University, Wis. 9-6 with 14 hits including three from Katie Thompson who hit a home run in a big fifth inning. UWRF fell in their second game of the afternoon 7-2 to McDaniel College.

First Game- UWRF 9, Concordia 6

Brooke Lauritzen pitched a strong game on the mound for the win to improve to 4-2 on the season. She went 5.2 innings striking out three batters and only gave up two earned runs.

After a scoreless first inning the Falcons scored the games first run in the top of the second when Michelle LaCasse hit a sac fly to center field to bring in Toni Lubahn. Lubahn was pinch running for Kaitlyn LePine who recorded three hits in the game.

The game would go back and forth the rest of the way as Concordia scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. LePine hit a double to start the fourth and Thompson hit a single right after. Amber O'Connell brought both runners home two outs later when she singled to left field giving UWRF the lead back.

In the top of the fifth it looked to be all UWRF when Aiyana Ledwein singled and was brought home by Abbie Morris's double to right center. Morris has six doubles this season while hitting a .373. Later in the inning Thompson sailed a home run over the center field fence. Lauritzen finished off the strong UWRF inning when she tripled to bring in a run putting the Falcons up 7-2.

Concordia rallied in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs on five hits but could not take the lead leaving two runners on base. UWRF put two more runs on the board in the top of the seventh and Morris shut down Concordia for the save in the bottom of the inning. The save was the first for any Falcon this season.

Thompson, LePine, Ledwein and O'Connell all had multiple hit games for UWRF. Thompson is hitting .468 on the season with three home runs and four doubles. LePine is also hitting strong with .396 and a team leading seven doubles.

Second Game- McDaniel 7, UWRF 2

The second game did not go as smoothly for the Falcons. McDaniel jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring two runs right away in the first, one in the third and poured in four runs in the fourth. A big reason was the four steals they recorded as their base running kept UWRF on their toes the whole game. Caroline Brehm went the full seven innings for McDaniel only giving up two earned runs and six hits.

The Falcons managed to put two runs on in the bottom of the fourth when LaCasse hit a double to left field. LaCasse is hitting a .355 on the season with two doubles. UWRF could not get another spark going the rest of the game. They finished with six hits led by two from Ledwein. The freshman, Ledwein, is hitting a .400 on 20 at bats this season.

Morris took the loss on the season to fall to 4-5 in 3.1 innings of work giving up seven hits and seven earned runs. Lauritzen finished the final 3.2 innings only allowing two hits and no runs. Laurtizen has a 2.28 ERA on the season.

UWRF will finish their Florida trip tomorrow with games against Tufts University and Worcester State University. Tufts is the back to back defending Div. III softball champions and are currently ranked No. 1 in the nation.
