Softball Gets Swept In WIAC Opener Against Whitewater

Falcons Fall 3-1 In First Game, 11-0 In Second Game In Outdoor Home Opener

The UW-River Falls Falcons played their first two games at Ramer Field this season against UW-Whitewater for their first WIAC games of the year as well. After scoring a run right away in the first inning of the first game UWRF did not score another run on the day falling 3-1 and 11-0.

First Game:

UWRF started out with a strong first inning when Sarah Sorensen singled and Abbie Morris doubled to left center. Michelle LaCasse brought home Sorensen with two outs in the inning when she ripped a single through the right side giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. UWW countered in the top of the second with a run of their own.

The game turned into a pitching duel for a while in the middle with Bekka Houda only allowing one more hit the rest of the game to the Falcons while striking out seven batters and went all seven innings. Brooke Lauritzen pitched 5.1 innings for UWRF striking out six batters and giving up six hits.

Paige Evangelista changed the game when she connected for a two shot home run in sixth inning. Not long after the home run Morris came in to finish the game on the mound for the Falcons and did not allow a hit.

LaCasse finished with two of the four Falcon hits. The loss dropped Lauritzen to 5-4 on the season. She has a 2.68 ERA on the season.

Second Game:

It only took six innings for the Warhawks to win the second game after their bats caught fire in the fourth and six innings while Kelynn Sporer only allowed one hit the whole way.

Seventeen UWW players saw some sort of action in the game while 16 Falcons got in. Mackenzie Price hit a homer to center field to give UWW two runs in the third. The Warhawks bats took off in the fourth inning with five hits that brought in five runs along with being helped by a Falcon error. Four more hits brought in four more runs for UWW in their 11-0 victory.

LaCasse was the lone Falcon to get a hit in the game. She has a .353 batting average so far this season. Morris, Lauren Janssen, Lauritzen and LaCasse all saw the mound in the game giving up eight earned runs. Morris took the loss to fall to 7-6 this season.

UWRF will play at Hamline University Thursday with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
