Falcons Dominate in 3-0 Victory at Gustavus

Box Score

St. Peter, MN (uwrfsports.com)-The UW-River Falls men's hockey team (11-4-3) faced off with Gustavus Adolphus (3-10-2) on Saturday night to complete their weekend of two road games.  The Falcons dominated action from start to finish on their way to a 3-0 win.

The Falcons and Gusties played a very even first 10 minutes of the first period as both teams created some scoring chances early and both defenses shutting the door. Then right after the 10 minute mark the Falcons' Ryan Gotelaere was called for an interference penalty and put the Gusties on the power play.
The penalty killers of the Falcons did a good job blocking shots and killed off the penalty.  Tanner Milliron made a few big stops as well to keep the Gusties off the board.

Less than a minute after the Falcons killed off the penalty, at the 7:03 mark of the 1st period the Falcons broke into the offensive zone with a 3 on 1 and they made it count when Joe Drapluk, found the back of the net with a quick shot from the left side of the Gustie goaltender.  He was assisted on the goal by Michael Lant.
At the 15:24 mark of the period Jake Bushey for Gustavus was called for tripping and sent the Falcons to the power play.

The Falcons 2nd goal of the period came just 25 seconds later when the Falcons had a great rush up the ice and some great passing when Michael Lant hit Doner with a pass going to the side of the net who then threw the puck out front and found Christian George in front and he buried it in the back of the net.  The power play goal put the Falcons up 2-0.

The Falcons would strike for the third time in the period at the 17:54 mark of the period when Christian George found Kyle Gattelaro who put the puck in the back of the net for his 7th goal of the season. The first period ended with the Falcons up 3-0.  Tanner Milliron ended the period with 12 saves and the Falcons scored their 3 goals on 11 shots.

The second period began with the Falcons looking to keep the pressure on the Gusties.  The Falcons created numerous scoring chances in early in the period and finally at the 3:43 mark of the period the Gusties were called for cross-checking and the Falcons were headed to the power play.  The Falcons got some shots on goal during the power play but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Falcons dominated puck possession the rest of the period.  They played most of the 2nd period in the offensive zone and when the Gusties did get the puck towards the Falcon end, the defense stepped up and kept the Gusties from getting any pressure.  The Falcons did a great job keeping the Gusties to the outside and most of the time not allowing them to get the puck anywhere near their goal.
The second period ended with the Falcons still leading 3-0. The Falcons held the Gusties to only 3 shots on goal for the entire 2nd period while the Falcons managed to get 8 shots on net.

The third period started much like the 2nd period.  The Falcons dominated puck possession and offensive zone time throughout the first ten minutes allowing on brief moments where the Gusties controlled the puck in the offensive zone.  The Falcons continued to fire shots toward the Gusties goal tender.
At 11:31 mark of the period Eddie Matsuhima was called for holding and sent the Gusties to a power play.  The Falcons killed the penalty off with ease and shortly after the power play the Gusties were called for tripping and sent the Falcons to the power play.  The Falcons sustained some pressure on the power play but were unable to score on the power play.

The Falcons continued to dominate the rest of the way and Tanner Milliron recorded a shutout and the Falcons won 3-0.  He recorded 18 saves and pushed his record to 9-4-3 on the season.
The Falcons return home next Thursday Jan. 21st, when they take on UW-Eau Claire.  Puck drop is set for 7:05pm.
