Men's Hockey Gets Big Road Win

Milwaukee, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The UW-River Falls men's hockey team got a pair of goals from Mike Fazio and Christian George in route to a 5-2 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcon offense got off to a fast start in the first period with Mike Fazio scoring his first goal of the night just under 4 minutes into the period.   He was assisted on the goal Blake Busch and Mike Dietrich.
  • The Raiders would answer and tie the game at 1 with a power play goal by Clint Garris just over 4 minutes later in the period.
  • The two teams would trade power play opportunities late in the period, but neither team could break the tie as the period ended with the score tied at 1.
  • The Falcons would begin the second period on a short power play followed by a great penalty kill where the Falcons only allowed 1 shot to reach their net.
  • With just over 5 minutes into the second period the Falcons got their first power play of the period and Christian George scored a power play goal to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. He was assisted on the goal by Michael Lant and Terry Leabo.
  • UWRF penalty killers were very busy in the second period having to kill off 3 straight penalties on the Falcons.  Late in the period the Falcons were called for their 5th penalty of the period and the Raiders were finally able to capitalize on the power play with a goal by Jerad Tafoya to tie the game at 2.
  • The Falcons began the third period with a 2 man advantage on the power play but were unable to break the tie.
  • With just under 5 minutes into the period the Falcons would go back on the man advantage and this time would need just over a minute of power play time to break the 2-2 tie. Christian George would score on the power play to put the Falcons up 3-2, he was assisted on the goal by Ryan Doner and Eddie Matsushima.
  • Mike Fazio would score his second goal of the game with little more than 8 minutes left to put the Falcons up 4-2.  Mike Dietrich would get the lone assist on Fazio's second goal.
  • Joe Drapluk would find the back of the net just over 2 minutes later to give the Falcons a 5-2 lead. Danny Hamburg and Mitch Kontny would get the assists.
  • Zach Quinn made 21 saves for the Falcons, pushing his record to 2-2-1 on the year.
  • The Falcons out shot the Raiders 41-23 on the night.
  • Mike Fazio won 15 of 21 faceoffs for the Falcons.
THE OPPOSITION
  • Gage Christianson led the Raiders with 5 shots on net.
  • Jerad Tafoya had a goal and one assist for the Raiders.

LOOKING AHEAD
  • The Falcons will open up WIAC play when they travel to UW-Stevens Point on Dec. 2nd. with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
  • UW-Eau Claire will visit Hunt arena to take on the Falcons on Saturday Dec. 3rd with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
