Falcons Defeated by Pointers in WIAC Opener

Stevens Point, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – On the road in hostile territory, the UW-River Falls men's hockey team was defeated by the defending National Champion UW-Stevens Point Pointers 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tanner Karty broke open the scoring in the first period for the Pointers. He scored the first goal at 18:10 in the first period. He was assisted by Trace Strahle and Lawrence Cornellier.
  • Neither team scored in the second period, Zach Quinn stopped 14 shots in the second period alone and kept the Falcons in the game heading into the final period.
  • UWRF would have chances to tie the game in the third period. Blake Busch sent a shot midway through the final period that hit pipe, but couldn't cross the line.
  • In the final period, the Falcons would fire a game high seven shots on goal in the third period alone, but Max Milosek stopped all seven, and all 15 in the game.
  • The Pointers would add a goal at 16:44 in the third period and an empty net goal at 18:54 to down the Falcons 3-0.
  • Mitchell Vanderburg had a team-high three shots on goal in the game. Michael Lant, Mason Van Tuyi, Brian Drapluk, and Danny Hamburg would each add two shots on goal.
  • Mike Fazio won eight of his 14 face offs in the game. Joe Drapluk would win seven of his 12 in the game. The Falcons overall won 22 of the 51 total face offs.
  • In the game, the Falcons were called for three penalties, all minors. UWRF would only hae one power play in the game, which was in the third period. Only four penalties were called in the game.
 
THE OPPOSITION
  • Lawrence Cornellier had the Pointers high in shots with five. Kyle Sharkey had five shots in the game as well.
  • Willem Nong-Lambert won 10 of his 14 face offs in the game. The Pointers dominated face offs in the game with 29 victories in 51 tries.
  • Milosek had more than just 15 saves for the Pointers, he was able to score a goal himself in the final period and assisted on the final goal of the game, both were empty net goals. 
  • As a team, the Pointers had 31 shots on goal, 14 different players had a shot on goal for UW-Stevens Point.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
UW-River Falls will now return home for another WIAC clash, this time with UW-Eau Claire at 7:05 p.m. The Falcons last faced the Blugolds last season on January 21st and defeated them 2-1 at home. UWRF swept Eau Claire last season 2-0.
