Pearson Pours in a Career-High In Road Win

Northfield, Minn. (uwrfsports.com) – Garret Pearson scored a career-high 30 points in a dominating performance and added six rebounds in a 69-64 road win over Carleton College.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • After a three with 2:16 to go Carleton was down just one, but Pearson answered with a three of his own, and the Falcons would force the Knights to go 0-3 from the floor and force two turnovers in the final two minutes to get the win.
  • UWRF controled the game for most of the first half, Carleton took a lead with 11:20 to go, but Pearson hit a three to respond and the Knights did not lead the rest of the first half.
  • Neither team led by more than six points in the first half.
  • With the game close late in the first half, the Falcons turned to Pearson once again. Pearson scored the final seven points of the first half, and help the Falcons hold off the Knights heading into the locker room up by one.
  • In the first half, Pearson led all scorers with 15 points, Alex Herink contributed a solid first half as well with 11 points on 5-7 shooting.
  • The two teams exchanged the lead eight times in the first five minutes of the second half.
  • Herink hit the final go-ahead shot with 14:44 to go in the second half, and the Falcons would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.
  • Carleton made it a game in the remaining time, keeping the Falcons within four points for the first part of the second half. 
  • UWRF separated themselves with Carleton at 9:50 when Matt Timlin drove to the hoop and connected on a layup to give the Falcons an eight point lead.
  • Carleton made one last push late in the half with five straight points to trail by just two with 3:06 to go. They would pull within one point with 2:16 to go.  
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Pearson's career-high 30 points breaks his previous career-high 28 that he set against UW-La Crosse last season.
  • Pearson hit four of his nine shots from the three point line. He was also 6-6 from the charity stripe.
  • Herink finished with 16 points in the game on 6-9 shooting. He also had six rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes of action.
  • Devin Buckley was the third Falcon in double figures with 10 points. He had five rebounds to add to his total and one steal.
  • From the floor, the Falcons shot 25-64 (39.1 percent) and connected on six threes as a team. UWRF was efficient from the free throw line going 13-14 (92.9 percent).
  • The Falcons had the edge in rebounds with 38 as a team to the Knights 32.
  • As a team the Falcons managed just nine turnovers and took advantage Knights mishaps, scoring 20 points off their 14 turnovers.  

THE OPPOSITION
  • The Knights had three scorers in double-figures. Led by Freddie Gillespie with 13, Kevin Grow added 10 and Beau Smit had 10 as well.
  • Carleton shot 26-53 (49.1 percent) from the floor, but couldn't take advantage at the free throw line going 8-14 (57.1 percent).  
  • 22 of the Knights points came off the bench, Peter Bakker-Arkema scored nine points in 15 minutes off the bench and Ryan Casperson scored five points on 2-4 shooting.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Hamline Pipers (5-3, 2-2 MIAC) are the next on the schedule for the UW-River Falls men's basketball team. The tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on December 17th. The Falcons then return home for their final game of 2016 against St. Olaf College (3-4, 1-2 MIAC)
