Lights Out Shooting in Second Half Helps Falcons to Win

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – Using a 52-point second half, the UW-River Falls men's basketball team stretched their win streak to 10 straight with a 78-57 win over UW-Platteville.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • For most of the game, it was the Alex Herink show. Finishing with 26 points, Herink helped lead an 11-1 run in the second half to help the Falcons pull away from the Pioneers.
  • Early in the first half, both teams struggled to take control of the game with a number of turnovers early on.
  • The game never became one sided in the first half, but the Falcons were able to keep the Pioneers at bay leading for the remainder of the first half after a three pointer by Clay Seifert at 17:37.
  • Up by eight points in the middle of the first half, the Pioneers did their best to hang around using a 9-1 run to bring the Falcon lead to just one point. The Falcons led by just two at the end of the first half.
  • Platteville put the heat on UWRF by taking the lead to open the second half with a three pointer by Trey Sigel.  
  • The two teams exchanged the lead four times in the first minute and ten seconds of the second half before UWRF took back control with an and-one by Herink.
  • After the 11-1 run by UWRF, the Falcons also used a 10-0 run to roar out to a 21 point lead with 10:19 to go in the game.
  • Shooting an astounding 19-30 (63.3 percent) in the second half, the Falcons were able to coast to their 10th straight win, and seventh straight home win dating back to last season.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Herink shot 8-14 from the floor and shot a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line to finish with 26 points. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists.
  • The Falcon defense suffocated the Pioneers offense all night, the Pioneers shot 31.4 percent from the floor, the lowest field goal percentage allowed since November 30, 2014 when they allowed 28.6 percent against Northland College.
  • Garret Pearson shrugged off a slow start to finish with 11 points on 5-8 shooting and gobble up six rebounds.
  • Senior Grant Erickson dished out six assists in the game and had four rebounds.
  • As a team, UWRF finished 29-61 (47.5 percent) from the floor and sank seven three pointers, five of them coming in the second half.
  • UW-River Falls dominated the paint scoring 40 points to the Pioneers 16.
  • 16 players played in the game for UWRF, with 10 of them scoring.

THE OPPOSITION
  • Cory Vaassen led the Pioneer offense with 18 points on 6-11 shooting. He also grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Trey Sigel was the other Pioneer with double-digit points with 12. He did most of his work at the free throw line going 7-9 from the stripe.
  • As a team, UW-Platteville shot 16-51 (31.4 percent) from the floor, and shot 7-24 (29.2 percent) from the three point line.
