Men's Basketball Wins in Overtime

WHEATON, Ill. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team pulled out a 72-69 overtime win over Depauw University Saturday evening at the Lee Pfund Classic hosted by Wheaton College inside King Arena.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers got on the board first and jumped to a 14-2 lead in the first half. 
  • The Falcons responded with four points to cut the lead down to 8-16.
  • The Tigers answered back with an 8-2 run to push their lead to 20-8.
  • Austin Moldenhauer hit a three-point shot at 7:41 and started an 11 point run that got the Falcons within three. 
  • Julian Jackson made two layups in the last minute before halftime and the Falcons trailed 27-29 heading into the halftime break.
  • In the first half, the Falcons were led by Brennan Witt with seven points on 3-5 shooting from the floor. Austin Moldenhauer had five points off the bench and was 2-4 from the floor.  
  • The Tigers opened the second half with back to back three point shots.
  • At 13:06, Austin Heidercker made a fast break and went in for a layup but was fouled by Andrew Kus.  Heidecker made his free-throw and got the Falcons within one.
  • Heidecker tipped one in at 10:27 to give the Falcons their first lead of the game 47-46.
  • The Tigers responded with a seven point run and it looked like they would get the three point win with 11 seconds remaining but Austin Moldenhauer sank a 3-pointer from downtown with four seconds to tie the game up and force an overtime period.   
  • Entering overtime tied at 64, the Falcons opened with a 3-pointer and never looked back after that. It was just the second time all game they held the advantage after leading for a total of nine seconds in the second half.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • The bench was the strength for the Falcons tonight as they accounted for 38 points for the Falcons.  Austin Heidecker led the charge coming off the bench and scoring a team high 16 total points. He was 6-9 from the floor and 3-3 from the line.  He also collected nine rebounds and two steals. 
  • Austin Moldenhauer and Julian Jackson each accumulated eight points each.  Jackson was 4-6 from the floor and Moldenhauer was 2-6 from the behind the arc. 
  • Alex Herink had a double double night scoring fifteen points and battling it out for ten rebounds. 
  • Brennan Witt was 4-6 from the floor for nine points and had seven rebounds. 
  • The Falcons shot 26-67 (38.8 percent) from the floor in the game and 7-27 (25.9.1 percent) from the arc. They were 13-17 (76.5) from the free throw line.
 
THE OPPOSITION
  • The Tigers controlled most of the game having the lead for 38 minutes of play.   
  • David Vogel was the leading scorer of the game with 17 points.  He was 4-11 from the arc and 3-4 from the line. 
  • Jack VandeMerkt put up double digit points with 14, he was 6-10 from the line.
  • The Tigers shot 22-59 (37.3 percent) from the floor and 9-26 (34.6 percent) from the three point line.  They converted 16 of their 23 free throw shots. 
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The 2-1 Falcons host UW-Superior Tuesday Nov. 21.  Game time is set for 8 p.m. following the women's game.
