Men's Hockey Falls to St. John's

River Falls, Wis.  (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls Men's Hockey team lost their home opener to the St. John's Johnnies at Hunt Arena.  St. John's took advantage of the power play in the contest to take home the 6-2 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
  • The Johnnies got on the board first with an even strength goal at 1:39.  Adam Orn took the shot from the right point, it was blocked in front, but Zach Quinn was unable to control the rebound.  Sam Valerius pounced on the loose puck for St. John's.
  • Late in the period, St. John's converted on the power play after a few seconds as Ryan Kero found himself wide open in front of the net and was able to score his first goal of the season.
  • A very physical 2nd period started with River Falls getting on the board at the 4:28 mark.  Cayden Cahill scored from in the slot on the power play to cut the Johnnies lead in half to 2-1.
  • The physical nature of the second period started to show at the 12:38 mark when UW-River Falls Brad Hofelich was given a 5-minute major, and a game misconduct for checking from behind.
  • The hitting on both sides kept up until Peter Karavos from UW-River Falls was called for checking from behind at 18:06.  This started a small scrum which resulted in Ryan Gotelaere from River Falls, and Brady Heppner from St. John's going off for off-setting roughing penalties.
  • The scoring continued with only 22 seconds left when Sam Valerius put pass right through the crease right onto the stick of Garrett Riebling who scored to make it 3-1.
  • Zach Quinn made 16 saves through the first two periods, and was pulled after the second for Michael Hughes in the 3rd.
  • The 3rd period started off with St. John's scoring their 4th goal as Cole Suoto scored at even strength to make it 4-1.
  • At the 11:52 mark Chris Murphy of UW-River Falls was assessed a 5-minute penalty for contact to the head and a game misconduct.
  • On the ensuing power play Travis Brown scored from in front to make it 5-1.
  • The Johnnies made it 6-1 at 15:08, when Adam Orn's shot went off of the UW-River Falls defenseman, and bounced into the net.
  • The Falcons closed the gap to 6-2 when Max Doner buried a pass from Aussie Miller at 17:14.
